Winter-friendly summer houses
Summer houses perfect for cold winters
59 m²
Surrounded by tall birch trees at Arresø in northern Zealand, this magical cottage is in perfect harmony with its surroundings. The architect-designed house fuses Japanese-Scandinavian aesthetics with sustainability and uncompromising simplicity in a gentle, tranquil expression that is a delight for the heart and soul.
Rise with the birds, brew a cup of coffee, sneak out of the cottage on bare toes, and walk the three minutes along the path to Arresø to watch the sun rise from the bird tower. After the day has started in the best, quiet way in the middle of nature, you can trundle back to the cottage and settle down on the sofa or window seat. Read a book, talk to a loved one or simply let yourself be enchanted by the view of the silver birch trunks and forest foliage beautifully framed by the cottage windows.
You are in the middle of nature at Arresø, where you can go for long walks in the forest or along the lake. In just half an hour you can cycle to Stængehus Strand along the scenic route through Asserbo Plantage and take a dip in the waves before letting the day draw to a close under the night sky on the cottage's terrace.

We're Jamiee and Stephanie. Jamiee is originally from Wales, has lived in Denmark for a number of years and works as an architect with a focus on innovation and climate. Stephanie is an ethnologist working on environment, waste and resources. We love nature and need our weekly trips away from the city to the cottage where we relax and immerse ourselves. We bought the plot in 2019 and designed and built the cottage in collaboration with Office Kim Lenschow.
The summer house is built on bolted foundations, so the forest floor is untouched. Sustainability has been a top priority, so the house has been built with an eye on as little waste as possible, and eco-certified and recycled materials have been used. Studio Archival Studies has designed and digitally produced the interiors in terms of kitchen, bathroom and wardrobes etc., and the aesthetic bears the mark of Scandinavian and Japanese simplicity.
When we are at the cottage, we enjoy daily walks in the woods and by the lake. We like to have lunch at Tinggaarden, which has a farm shop, and cycle to Stængehus Strand or Tisvilde for a swim. The summer house is for us the ultimate oasis of peace and quiet, miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
