Enchanting thatched summer house in Nationalpark Thy

Thisted, Denmark

Highlights and descriptions have been auto-translated from Danish

Highlights from John & Joanna

  1. The enchanting curved ceilings create an incredibly calm atmosphere throughout the cottage
  2. The summer house is surrounded by bright birch trees, and the beautiful shadow play on the backdrop of roughly cut grass is absolutely stunning
  3. National Park Thy is a scenic area with many opportunities for good walks, experiences and intimacy

The beautiful thatched cottage is completely secluded in a forest on a planted meadow. Here the dune landscape and the forest are the closest neighbours. The cottage was renovated and rebuilt 14 years ago and is now clad in black wood shavings and thatched. Inside, the house has been completely rebuilt, respecting the identity of the cottage. All walls and doors are clad in Douglas wood, which gives the rooms a warm glow, natural colour and a Scandinavian touch. In the lovely living room there is a fireplace under a beautiful arched ceiling and then there is an open connection to the bright and cosy kitchen. The living room has wireless internet and the option to connect your computer to the TV, so you can enjoy a breezy evening with a good movie. The kitchen is furnished with everything needed to create the good dinner, which can be enjoyed at the fine dining table. There are also two bedrooms on the ground floor, sleeping a total of three people. From all rooms on the ground floor there is access to the lovely terraces. Under the arched ceiling on the first floor there is a double bedroom and an alcove under an attic with another sleeping space. Opposite the sleeping alcove is a similar niche used for bed linen storage. The cottage is surrounded on all sides by terraces with sheltered planted stone walls. In the middle of the grounds, under the tall birch and oak trees, there is a large fire pit, bordered by a hedge and benches. The trees in the grounds have been trimmed to provide long views while offering intimate and sheltered seating. In the front garden the construction of an outbuilding clad in black wood shingles and grass on the roof is ongoing. In this outbuilding you will find the two bicycles, which can be borrowed to explore the beautiful Thy National Park with all its distinctive features and opportunities.

Meet your host

John & Joanna

Host since September 2021

We are a family of three consisting of Joanna, John and our son Peter, who attends primary school. We currently live in Aarhus, where we run an architectural firm together. John, together with his fellow students from the School of Architecture, has run and built up a large international firm, which has now been replaced by the joint family design studio. Joanna is also CEO of a landscape architecture firm. We thus work with Scandinavian design and architecture on a daily basis, and our cottage is very much influenced by this. Materials, light, nature and "Danish cosiness" are the main focus. We love living in the cottage, which is a nice contrast to an active life in a big city, and here is a relaxing tranquility among the vast expanses of the National Park Thy. It feels like we are far away from everyday life despite the fact that we are still in Denmark. We use National Park Thy a lot on our long walks or bike rides with our dog. The interaction between walking in the dune landscape behind the North Sea and directly along the water, at all times of the year, has become a part of us. We enjoy being blown through and then sitting in front of the fireplace - it's one of the best things we know. When the weather is quieter, we sit in the garden among the trees, enjoying the sound of the fire by our intimate fire pit while making pancakes and popcorn. Nr. Vorupør is a cosy little fishing village and there are plenty of things to do here. The fishing village has a coastal front with fish houses, wind-up games, restaurants and holiday apartments. The 100-metre pier for which Nr. Vorupør is famous provides shelter for fishing boats and now also the famous Cold Hawaii of the surf sport.
