How colour shaped a Swedish holiday home

When the Landfolk team set out to gently update a 1970s holiday home in southern Sweden, one of the most important choices was colour. The house already had generous windows, beautiful light, and a strong connection to nature - but lacked a clear sense of flow between rooms. We wanted to create a calm, coherent atmosphere that felt deeply tied to its surroundings.

Start with a feeling

To guide the process, we partnered with Stockholm-based paint brand Klint. Known for their carefully curated palette and nature-inspired approach, they helped us build a colour scheme that respects the home’s original character while making each room feel welcoming and easy to live in.

Finding the right colour isn’t about following trends, but should be about supporting the way a space should feel.

Our goal is to make decorating with colours easier, more inspiring, and more personal. We are driven by the belief that colour has a huge impact on how a space feels. Inspired by nature and everyday life, we’ve tested over 1000 shades to land on a curated palette of 155 colours, all carefully chosen to help people create spaces they truly feel at home in.”

Before thinking about tones or pairings, Klint starts with one simple question:

Start with the feeling you want the space to give. Should it feel calm and restful, light and airy, or maybe a bit more bold and playful?”

For a holiday home like this one - used for slow days, family time, and reconnecting with nature - a calm, grounded palette felt right from the start.

Testing colour in real light

One of the challenges when choosing colour for a holiday home is that light shifts constantly, depending on time of day, season, and weather. Klint’s hand-painted sticker swatches made it easy to test options directly on the walls.

“Whether you're by the coast, in the woods or in a city, colours can shift a lot depending on the light and landscape. That’s why our swatches are so useful - they let you see exactly how the colour will look in your own space.”

Being able to move the swatches around helped us choose shades that worked naturally with both the architecture and the surroundings - not just on one wall, but throughout the house.

A full palette that feels connected

With the overall mood set, we worked with Klint to build a full palette of colours that would create visual flow throughout the home. The muted green 132 - Tea became the foundation - calming, soft, and an echo of the surrounding trees outside the large windows.

From there, the full colour palette unfolded: in the north-facing bedroom, the soft dusty pink of 74 - Piglet adds quiet warmth; the south-facing bedroom is lifted by the gentle creaminess of 150 - Buttercup; and throughout the house, the rich earthy tone of 67 - Rioja along with the quiet blue of 127 - Forget Me Not offered small but striking accents. Together, these colours create a subtle visual rhythm - connecting rooms while allowing each space to feel distinct. The result is a holiday home that feels both coherent and full of personality, making it easy to furnish, easy to live in, and a pleasure to return to.

“If it’s a place to relax, soft beiges, warm greens or muted blues can help set that tone. If it’s where you gather, a richer or more playful colour can make it feel even more memorable.”

The result is a subtle visual rhythm - allowing each room to feel distinct while still belonging to the same whole.

Choosing colour for your holiday home

For anyone thinking about colour in their own holiday home, Klint’s advice remains simple:

“Whether that is rested, playful, focused, nostalgic or grounded - let the feeling guide your choices.”

Once the mood is set, a small palette of supporting colours can create depth and coherence:

“A soft neutral such as beige or off-white can anchor a space. From there, you can add warmth, freshness or depth - depending on the mood you want to create.”

Paint and stickers

If still in doubt, one way to make that choice easier is trying out the hand-painted sticker swatches by Klint, and testing them directly on the walls - making it possible to try out different colours in different rooms and lighting before making a final decision.
