7 beaches off the beaten path you need to experience in Denmark this summer

Maybe you’ve been to Denmark many times already, or maybe it’s on your bucket list to visit the country in the north with the characteristic sand dunes where you can stay at the beach all day, as the sun doesn’t set until after 9 pm during the summer. This is our insider’s guide to seven hidden beaches you didn’t know existed in Denmark – and we recommend you try them out for a summer holiday off the beaten path.

1. Enjoy a fun and active holiday at Lynæs strand

Shallow water, soft sand and warm summer winds - a beach day at Lynæs strand offers the perfect condition for an active family holiday. Here you’ll find cosy eateries, a bathing bridge and a playground for the little ones. This gem is also less known than the other beaches in Odsherred and if you enjoy kitesurfing or windsurfing, the close proximity to Lynæs Surfcenter makes Lynæs strand the perfect destination.

2. Build sand castles and collect sea shells at Lumsås strand

The small town of Lumsås has an extraordinary beach that is perfect for sand castles, sun bathing, swimming and collecting sea shells. If you are craving a little more privacy, the beautiful dunes offer the perfect hideaway where you can enjoy some peace and quiet surrounded by the tall, soft grass. It’s also a beautiful spot for an evening stroll while you enjoy the view. A quick 10 min bike ride away, you’ll find Ishuset i Lumsås that offers old fashioned ice cream cones and hot drinks.

Nestled between Gilleleje and Rågeleje you will find Smidstrup strand, where you can bring the whole family, including your dog, for a fun day at the beach. The shallow water makes it perfect for the kids and with Kollerødgård Ismejeri just a couple of kilometers away, you can enjoy a break from the sun with a delicious treat.

If you want to experience the iconic candy striped bathing houses, Rågeleje Strand is not far away, and is also the perfect place to visit if you want to try windsurfing or kitesurfing.

If you prefer to enjoy your beach day in a secluded spot where your family can truly relax away from everything, Lille Kulgab is a wonderful location for you. The beach at Stængehus, located just a few kilometers down the coast is among the most secluded beaches in Denmark, where you and your family can enjoy your time together almost without being disturbed. Both beaches are great swimming spots and rest in the beautiful dunes of the nature reserve Tisvilde Hegn.
