Amalie Nielsen’s everyday antidote: quiet days on Lundø

Blueberry pancakes on an open fire, undisturbed time together embraced by stunning architecture and design, homemade buns and warm summer days surrounded by lush greenery. That is designer Amalie and her boyfriend Frederik’s everyday antidote. They travelled to Lundø to enjoy a break from the hustle and bustle in Copenhagen to rest and recharge together.

With a busy life in the heart of Nørrebro, Amalie and Frederik were looking for an everyday antidote to the vibrant city life they lead – and they found it in a cosy cottage on Lundø. Because, while the couple, who are in their early thirties, love running and exploring the city and everything it has to offer with the people they love, the career-oriented lifestyle they lead also calls for a break from everyday life where they can truly relax and reset.

Samantha & Tobias’ cottage was exactly what they were looking for. With its authentic Friis and Moltke design, carefully curated interior and large panoramic windows that really allows nature to become part of the interior, the beautiful secluded house was the perfect fit.

What was the journey from Copenhagen to the cottage on Lundø like?
It was a beautiful trip through the Danish countryside. We drove from Copenhagen and jumped on the ferry at Sjællands Odde. The small stops along the way made the long journey a bit easier.

What did you enjoy the most about the local area? Did you discover any hidden gems? We loved that the house was so secluded and private. It was a gem in and of itself and provided us with the sense of peace we were looking for. But we also found a super unique and charming restaurant called Øhaven.

What do you love most about the cottage life?
The peace and cosiness it invites, space to take a nap in the sun and making pancakes over an open fire. Not having to rush anything and having nowhere to be – being allowed to just be and enjoy the small things.

Natural materials, delicious produce and a very tactile and sensory aesthetic feel like the defining features of your profile – what inspires you when curating your life?
My profile is a creative universe that depicts the things, moments and people that I find inspiring. I am inspired by the expression that emerges.

I also just love a cottage with materials like wood because it lays the foundation I need to really relax and feel cosy.

What is your definition of 'cottage core' in 2024?
Cottage core, for me, is about being more in tune with nature and wearing clothes that suit cottage life and its opportunities: wearing something you can move around in, sit by a fire in, and feel relaxed in.

It’s a common belief that this means that you can't dress nice and that everything has to be practical – but I believe you can be both practical and stylish at the same time.

For me, it's important to explore my style and allow it to be influenced by what I'm doing and where I am; this trip allowed me to explore the cottage core aesthetic in my own way and it only made me more eager to create many more cool outfits.

Do you ever shop second-hand items for your home, and did you find something special to bring home from your trip?
I love a good second-hand find when I'm travelling around Denmark, especially because there are often even more unique things in the really old second-hand shops far out in the countryside. This time, the trip was all about relaxing and enjoying the area embracing the summer house. With that said, there were many beautiful things in the cottage that I wish I could have taken back home with me.

What were the most important qualities you looked for when choosing a cottage for your getaway?
A cottage that would allow for relaxation and just enjoying our time together, far away from noise and disturbance – preferably close to the water so that we could take walks along the coast. We both love beautifully decorated homes and the cottage we visited fit the bill perfectly.

Where did you drink your morning coffee?
We had our morning coffee on the lovely south-facing terrace with our breakfast, as well as by the water – we packed a small basket and walked the 3 minutes down to the lovely calm beach for a dip in the sea followed by coffee and homemade buns.
