Discover the new upcoming summer house oases in North Zealand

Nestled between some of Denmark's most popular seaside towns such as Gilleleje, Tisvildeleje and Asserbo, you'll find little undiscovered holiday gems and secret hideaways. We guide you to the summer house areas on the North Coast that you may not have heard of - and to a number of beautiful Landfolk summer houses that can be the setting for your next summer holiday.

Most Danes and many tourists know Hornbæk, Gilleleje, Tisvildeleje and Asserbo, but if you continue through the popular seaside spots to the top of North Zealand, hidden holiday home gems await you in Halsnæs. According to estate agents, these areas may well become the new popular thing.

Experience true summer house idyll in Kikhavn

With its small alleys and yellow and whitewashed houses with thatched roofs and hollyhocks, the 800-year-old fishing village of Kikhavn is particularly lovely. From Kikhavn you can enjoy undisturbed beach days at the white, sandy beach and stop by farm shop Kikforbi, which has shelves stocked with local specialities and a cosy café during the summer.

If you're looking for a place to stay near Kikhavn, check out Cecilie and Morten's 70s oasis. The house exudes true holiday home cosiness with its large open terrace and green garden sheltered by the trees. Near the summer house, you can explore the cultural and natural gem Spodsbjerg with its steep coastal cliffs, the small lighthouse and the most beautiful view of the Kattegat. A stone's throw away is the polar explorer Knud Rasmussen's House, where the scientist made his home when he wasn't travelling on long expeditions to Greenland.

Summer house holiday by Denmark's largest lake

Have a summer holiday on the shores of Arresø and spend the night in Sara and Mikkel's architectural masterpiece, which they built themselves from foundation to ceiling. Enjoy the unique Nordic design details, the light and nature that floods in through the large windows, and the wild natural grounds on the edge of Arresø. On warm summer evenings, you can light a fire in the garden, while the colder months invite you to cosy up in front of the wood-burning stove.

If you want to explore the special nature around Arresø up close, you'll find a viewing platform at Ågabet in Frederiksværk, where a magnificent view of the lake and the reed forest opens up before you, and you can spot ospreys, kingfishers and reed warblers. Even though the industrial town of Frederiksværk is better known for its steelworks than for its cosy summer cottages, you'll find both fine cultural gems and great flea market finds here. Visit the old gunpowder works, now a museum, and hunt for bargains at Katrines kommode and Ole's Genbrug og Antikmarked.

See natural gems in Melby

Asserbo Plantation is known far and wide, but in the plantation's backyard is a string of beautiful holiday homes in Melby. Step back in time in Sophie and Kristian's retro summer house with colourful finds and warm and inviting decor. Enjoy the cottage's garden, where flowers are in full bloom in spring and the fire pit invites you to cosy up with sno bread and marshmallows.

The area around the holiday home is full of beautiful natural gems.

For example, hike across the purple heather carpet on Zealand's largest heathland, Melby Overdrev, where rare butterfly species live, or go for long walks and mountain bike rides in Tisvilde Hegn. Just around the corner is also the charming old farmhouse Tinggården, where the farm shop is stocked with delicacies, freshly baked bread and cinnamon rolls. And on Saturdays in odd-numbered weeks, you can swing by Torup Marked, where the stalls are packed with fresh vegetables, freshly harvested honey and all things fermented and pickled.

Enjoy art and local life in charming Dronningmølle

Between Hornbæk and Gilleleje, two of Denmark's most popular seaside resorts, lies little sister Dronningmølle. Although the area is not as well-known as its two lively neighbouring towns, Dronningmølle is the perfect setting for your next summer house trip. Spend the night in David's cosy wooden cottage, for example, where you can lose yourself in the cute details of the holiday home, the silence and the surrounding nature.

Dronningmølle is home to one of Denmark's undisputedly most beautiful beaches and a buzzing local community that has flourished in recent years. Eat Spanish tapas in the garden at Sydens Vine & Delikatesser or hunt for second-hand gold at the weekend flea market. Also visit the shop Drømmehuset with its large selection of home finds, knick-knacks and colourful cushions to brighten up your summer house and your mood.

Get close to the coast and slow down in Græsted

Are you looking for a holiday home area that is not as well-known and popular as Tisvildeleje and Rågeleje, for example? Then head to Græsted, which is located right between the two and is emerging as a popular holiday home area.

Stay, for example, in Nicolai and Anette's lovely wooden holiday home with the characteristic dark red wood, which is a stone's throw from the wild sea of the north coast and a lovely private beach. The light-filled outbuilding blurs the boundaries between house and garden, and Nicolai and Anette love to light fires in the garden and greet visiting animals.

The holiday home is not far from Heatherhill's heather-clad hills and Tisvilde Hegn, which invites you to go hiking and mountain biking. You can also enjoy warm summer evenings at Skibsredergrunden, where you can dine at tables and benches in the sunset. If you come to Græsted in July, don't miss Meyers' 'The world's best picnic', which invites locals and holiday home guests to a pop-up picnic with sourdough pizza, cinnamon rolls and lots of great activities. And if you're in need of a little life and vibrancy, head to Tisvildeleje's main street and fall in love with the vibrant city life.

Take a look at our selection of beautiful holiday home gems along the north coast and get inspiration for what to see, eat and experience on your weekend getaway in North Zealand.
