Landfolk

This is how we evaluate whether Landfolk is a good match for a holiday home

Find out how our skilled team of holiday home experts select the holiday homes that end up on landfolk.com. It's not about luxury or expensive design choices – because above all, we celebrate houses that feel personal and are decorated with intention.

We always evaluate holiday homes based on our established set of criteria – including whether the house is located in a scenic area and whether it’s decorated in a way that appeals to our guests.

For example, we know that our guests request houses with consistent style choices when it comes to the interior. This often means houses that feel personal and are used by the owners themselves when it’s not rented out. The general vibe is therefore often underlined by personal choices, where everything from flea market finds and art fills the rooms – just like it should in a second home. This doesn't mean that it has to be expensive or luxurious; it's much more important that the decor has a coherent and welcoming expression.

It feels luxurious without being luxurious, it’s just really well-done with lovely decor and soul, and personal style and charm.
– Dorte, Landfolk-guest

Above all, we are looking for personal decor and spaces that are decorated with intention, as opposed to, for example, decor that is dominated by furniture that has been moved to the holiday home just because there wasn’t space anywhere else – we all know what that looks and feels like. It’s just much more inviting to spend time in a space where the decor is personal and matches the style of the holiday home, and we know for a fact that that's what our guests are looking for.

In this article, you’ll find 5 different types of holiday homes with different characteristics, that are all good examples of places that align with what Landfolk's guests are looking for. These houses are often booked and highly requested by our guests when they are looking for a lovely place for their getaway.

A really important thing that they all have in common is that the houses, in and of themselves, feel like a complete experience rather than just a place to stay.

1. Classic wooden holiday homes

A ‘classic holiday home’ can be many things. In recent years, we've seen many classic wooden holiday homes that have recently received a gentle, loving touch with lighter colours in the decor and natural materials.

This is what we're looking for: High quality solutions and decor with flea market finds, knick-knacks, and cute and cosy details that create a warm and personal atmosphere.

I was looking for holiday home where more attention has been paid to the details than what you usually get from other rental agencies.

2. 70s holiday homes

In the summer houses from the 1970s, architecture and functionality go hand in hand. The beautiful details, the relaxing atmosphere, and large windows are particularly unique to the period, bringing nature all the way inside.

This is what we're looking for: Original details and personal decor, preferably in 70s style that matches the house.

We chose to book our stay through Landfolk because they are private homes with a good location rather than impersonal pool houses without charm.

3. Thatched roof holiday homes

These historic houses are something special. They tell the story of the lives previously lived there. Often surrounded by protected nature, the original details are preserved. This means that the holiday homes are filled with the soul and charm that Landfolk guests truly appreciate.

This is what we're looking for: Preserved original details and decor that complement the style in which the house was built. This creates a more complete experience than a historic house decorated in a completely different style – this is something that can truly break the spell.

We were tired of uninspired holiday homes with leather furniture. Therefore, we looked for holiday homes with more soul and came across Landfolk.
– Peter, Landfolk guest

4. Modern holiday homes

Clean lines and a touch of minimalism characterise many of the newly built holiday homes on Landfolk. Something they all have in common is that the decor is personal and reflects the hosts who use the holiday homes themselves when they are not renting it out.

This is what we're looking for: A brand new house doesn’t always have the same charm as an older holiday home. Therefore, we look for houses that have curated interior choices, quality materials and well-thought out details that uplevel the cosy atmosphere.

You want something nice and personal when you book a holiday home, not leather sofas and sterile rooms. I think Landfolk has hit the mark there.
– Jacob, Landfolk guest

5. Log cabins

Log cabins | Landfolk Log cabins | Landfolk A getaway spent in a log cabin can be something very special. It creates a warm and cosy atmosphere and often greatly contrasts the homes we usually live in. This is what we're looking for: Special or authentic decor that matches the uniqueness of the log cabin style – if a log cabin is furnished only with new IKEA furniture, some of the experience that many guests are looking for is lost. Wooden details, rustic furniture, and other well-considered details make log cabins a complete experience to vacation in.

Summer houses for rent often seem like a money-making machine and feel impersonal or cluttered with too many things that are just there because they shouldn't clutter ‘at home’. Landfolk seems like a place where cosiness is a priority.
– Sharmila, Landfolk guest

6. Architecturally designed holiday homes

Besides a great location in close proximity to nature, the kitchen is especially important for our guests. In a 2022 analysis, 89 percent of respondents stated that it’s somewhat to very important that a holiday home is equipped with a good kitchen for cooking. Landfolk's architecturally designed holiday homes appeal to guests who appreciate unique houses that are rarely furnished in a very mainstream way. This is what we're looking for: That an abundance of soul and personality has been put into the decor to match the effort that has gone into the holiday home’s architectural expression. Perhaps there is a particularly beautiful kitchen, high-quality furniture, or design finds that support the unique architecture.

The holiday homes exude warmth, and you really get the feeling that every house is carefully selected.
– Claudio, Landfolk guest

7. Contemporary wooden holiday homes

Contemporary holiday home | Landfolk Contemporary holiday home in wood | Landfolk These new houses built from wood have a special atmosphere that comes from the experience of being embraced by natural materials. They are often decorated with modern elements, as well as knick-knacks, art on the walls and plants, to name a few, to create a warm and personal atmosphere. This is what we're looking for: High-quality materials and solutions, stunning architecture and a sense of personal touch in the decor. Often, these houses can be decorated with cosy built-in nooks in the same material as the walls, and it’s details like these that help make the decor a complete experience and give the holiday home a particularly inviting feeling.
