You can become part of Danish history when you stay overnight in Ærøskøbing's oldest house, the listed Kjøbinghus from 1645. With Denmark's oldest iron-bound door in a market town house and a wealth of historical details, you step into a time capsule where past and present meet in the most beautiful way.
The low ceilings, wood paneling, and open fireplace create a very special atmosphere in the house's various rooms. From the blue shop, which now serves as a bedroom, to the living room with its old wood-burning stove from 1831, and on to the summer room with its beautiful light, each room tells its own story.
The charming courtyard with its uneven cobblestone pavement invites you to relax in the sun. The garden stretches far and wide and is surrounded by lilac bushes and old fruit trees, where the historic pear tree in particular has its own place in the house's story.
From the front door, you are only 100 meters from the town square with the old merchant's house and the town's whisky distillery. Explore the cobbled streets, visit Denmark's smallest cinema, or follow the Øhavsstien trail 200 meters from the back garden. Vester Strand with its iconic bathing huts is also within easy reach.

We are Dorte and Peter, and we come from Årslev on Midtfyn.
We are the happy and proud owners of Ærøskøbing's oldest house, dating from 1645, which appears authentic, beautiful, and unique, like a museum.
We enjoy showing off our house and telling its story. It is particularly interesting to show the house to professionals with a special interest in history, architecture, culture, and preservation.
It is wonderful to hear people's happy exclamations and comments as they walk past the house. It is also a pleasure to listen to the stories told by the night watchmen and other tourist guides when they gather in large or small groups in front of Kjøbinghus every day as part of their city tour.
We both work in Ærøskøbing—Dorte as a nurse at Denmark's smallest hospital and Peter as operations manager at Ærøskøbing & Rise Fjernvarme.
We are sailors and enjoy living by some of the world's best sailing waters—the South Funen Archipelago. We enjoy island life and are involved in community activities.

I stayed at Dorte and Peter's house: Søndergade 36, 5970 Ærøskøbing from Saturday, August 9 to Sunday, August 10, 2025.
A huge and warm thank you to Dorte and Peter for opening their doors and letting us catch a glimpse of a bygone era.
Dorte met me at the doorstep of the old, beautiful house in front of the cobblestones in the middle of Ærøskøbing.
I was shown around, and I honestly had to rub my eyes a few times.
It was like stepping back hundreds of years:
Old crooked floors, low ceilings that you had to duck under in some places, a wooden bench in front of thousands of beautiful 18th-century Dutch tiles on the wall, an old dining table, ceramic balls in all shapes and sizes on the cornice under the ceiling, the view of the old crooked garden through the lattice windows, old furniture that all had a story to tell. Everything was in the finest and cleanest condition.
There was also a functional kitchen and bathroom in newer condition, again clean and tidy.
The sun set over Ærøskøbing as the church bells rang, and I sat in the garden on a garden chair with a glass of cool wine after a walk around the old streets and alleys.
I even took a dip at Bøssehage, about a three-minute walk from the garden to the left.
Call it a summer house again!
It's a real house, with everything you need... and more!
Dorte was easy to communicate with, and you immediately felt at home with her instructions and explanations about the old house in Ærøskøbing.
If you are looking for peace, quiet, good food, a dip in the sea, perhaps an ice cream, or a market in the square, shopping in the old shops and feeling part of a small community, spiced with history and low ceilings, then there is plenty of headroom in the old living rooms here.
I'll be back. That's for sure.
Thank you both for sharing your unique and beautiful house with the rest of us.
I really appreciate it.
