Hop on your bike: 4 scenic cycling routes on Djursland
The fascinating Ice Age landscape of Djursland invites you to go cycling on short and long routes. Common to all routes is that the landscape changes over short distances, which is one of the very special characteristics of Djursland. We have put together a guide with four exciting cycling routes you should visit on Djursland – and even with small tips and recommendations from our local Landfolk hosts on what to see and experience along the way on your bike ride.
Experience the beautiful and varied nature of the Tved/Skødshoved peninsula
Route: Mols Hoved Route – Length: 30 km.
On this cycling route, you follow the Mols Hoved Route, which takes you around the Tved/Skødshoved peninsula on Mols. On the route, you can experience the peninsula's beautiful and varied nature up close. You pass through forested areas, lakes, streams, and cycle along the southern, western, and northern coasts, with views over Aarhus Bay, Begtrup Vig, Kalø Vig, and Knebel Vig. The approximately 30 km long route can easily be divided into smaller sections or taken over several days. Along the route, you will pass several Landfolk holiday homes where you can stay overnight and explore the area before continuing your journey.
On the route, you will, among other things, pass Skødshoved Strand, which is beautifully situated by Aarhus Bay and Kalø Vig. The beach is one of the most visited beaches on Mols, and buzzes with life and atmosphere during the summer. Here you can take a break and get an ice cream at the ice cream kiosk. Right next to the beach is Skødshoved Marina, where children can catch crabs along the pier while adults enjoy the cozy harbor atmosphere.
No more than 200-300 meters from Skødshoved Strand, you will find Charlotte and Michael's architect-designed 70s holiday home with views over Aarhus Bay. Here you can conveniently stay a couple of nights and experience the beautiful natural landscape of the Tved/Skødshoved peninsula before continuing the route.
Cycling in the middle of Denmark
Route: Helgenæs Route – Length: 20 km.
Helgenæs is a small hidden gem in Denmark, offering a range of very close-to-nature experiences. The small peninsula is located precisely in the middle of Denmark, and despite its modest size, it is filled with many diverse natural experiences.
On the approximately 20 km long Helgenæs Route, you will pass everything from steep cliffs and low salt marshes to small hills, warm hollows, and cozy villages. The route starts at General Ryes Skanser in the northern part of Helgenæs and goes through the villages of Borup, Esby, Ørby, and Kongsgårde. Most of the trip takes place on small asphalt roads with very little traffic.
On the route, you will, among other things, pass Sletterhage Lighthouse, which is recommended to visit by many of our Landfolk hosts who have holiday homes on Helgenæs. Sletterhage Lighthouse is an old lighthouse from the 19th century, which is still in operation today. Behind the lighthouse is the viewpoint Ellemandsbjerg, from which you have views over the entire southern part of Djursland, the east coast of Jutland, and the islands of Tunø, Samsø, and Hjelm. In clear weather, you can even see all the way to Zealand. Here you can take a well-deserved break before the trip heads north again towards the old fortress.
On safari on the Gravlev railway
Route: Gravlevstien – Length: 10 km.
On this route, you follow the disused railway, Gravlevbanen. The route starts in Djursland's arguably most popular holiday town, atmospheric Ebeltoft, which is located on the northern part of the Hasnæs peninsula. The cozy cobbled town offers plenty of shopping opportunities, cafes, and good restaurants. If you prefer to prepare dinner yourself in the holiday home, you can buy freshly caught fish from the cutter, Margrethe, which comes in with its catch in the morning to the cozy harbor.
From Ebeltoft, the route goes in a northwesterly direction through a beautiful and varied hilly landscape – a landscape shaped during and by the melting from the last Ice Age. On the route, you will also pass Djursland's largest lake, Stubbe Sø, which is definitely worth a stop. The lake is originally a water-filled kettle hole from the last Ice Age, and is today surrounded by forest.
On the last stretch, just before you reach Gravlev, there is a surprise where you almost can't believe your eyes. From the path, you might be lucky enough to see both giraffes and other exotic animals as you cycle by. This is because on the route you pass through a forest area which is the backside of the animal park Ree Park Safari, and here you can be lucky to spot various exotic animals through the fence as you cycle past. The Hasnæs peninsula is a fantastic area, and ideal for those who want to experience both the adventurous Ebeltoft and the many nature experiences in the surrounding area. Fortunately, you will find many Landfolk holiday homes on Hasnæs, including Anne and Kasper's holiday home in Ebeltoft, which is centrally located in the town and offers a magnificent view over the bay, Ahl, and Helgenæs.
Mountain biking in beautiful surroundings
Route: Singletrack MTB trail in Grenaa Plantage – Length: 23 km.
At the tip of Denmark's nose, on scenic Djursland, lies the historic market town and Djursland's largest city, Grenaa. The city has a charming medieval square and offers a wealth of delicious cafes and restaurants. However, the area around Grenaa is also known for something quite different, namely the many challenging mountain bike routes. Grenaa Plantage in particular is a popular spot for mountain bike enthusiasts. Here you will find Denmark's probably flattest singletrack trail, which nevertheless offers several challenges.
Grenaa Plantage is also an extremely beautiful area with alternating forest and large heathlands. In the plantation, you will also find a nice nature playground for children and an idyllic forest lake with picnic areas where you can enjoy your packed lunch.
If you enjoy mountain biking in beautiful surroundings, Grenaa is an obvious place to spend your holiday home vacation. You will find several Landfolk holiday homes close to Grenaa, including Pernille's beautiful black-painted holiday home, which is close to the beach, heath, forest – and not least close to miles of mountain bike trails. If the children need to be spoiled, Pernille's holiday home is a short distance from various animal parks, Djurs Sommerland, and the Kattegat Centre. The cinema in Grenaa, Grenaa Kino, is also a very nice and cozy little cinema.
