Autumn Holiday in Odsherred: 6 Autumn Events You Can't Miss

Art days, harvest market, candle dipping, and stories by the campfire's glow. We've gathered six activities you shouldn't miss when summer ends and Odsherred's ice age hills are enveloped in autumn's warm colors.

The forest is a riot of crimson, orange, and light brown, and the air becomes crisp and fresh. It's autumn holiday; time to gather around good books, slow-cooked meals, board games, and long walks. A cottage holiday is perfect for indoor creative pursuits, but don't miss out on a trip into Odsherred's autumn landscape for cozy excursions with the whole family, cultural gems with friends, or special moments with a loved one.

Join in as painting, pottery, and glass blowing take place

Odsherred was once home to an artist colony that captured the hills' special light and beauty in their works. This is celebrated during Art Days in the autumn holiday, where good folk and art enthusiasts are invited to explore exhibitions, working workshops, and galleries in Odsherred's ice age hills.

So, grab your friends and family, take the app with you, and plan your own route among Odsherred's practicing artists who will be painting, throwing clay, and blowing glass in week 42. Perhaps you'll even return to your cottage with a unique piece of art under your arm.

Attend a harvest festival and crown Denmark's best carrot

Lammefjorden is known for its flavorful vegetables grown on the nutrient-rich muddy soil of the former fjord bed. And during the autumn holiday, UNESCO Global Geopark Odsherred highlights the crisp vegetables from Odsherred with the food and harvest festival Grand Cru.

The program includes the traditional Grand Cru crowning of the year's best carrot, and you can look forward to tastings from Odsherred's treasure trove of raw ingredients at farm shops and food producers scattered throughout the ice age hills. Among other things, get rosy cheeks at Besøgsmarken, where you can pick fresh vegetables to take home for dinner at the cottage. Or take your partner or friends to a wine tasting at Vejrhøj Vingård in Fårevejle and taste your way through the farm's eight different varieties, shaped by wind and weather.

Get lost in the dark at a literature festival

Step into the autumn twilight when Anneberg Kulturpark invites you to a new literature and storytelling festival from October 15-22. The 'Into the Dark' festival features visits from authors such as Knud Romer, Anna Grue, and Dy Plambeck and presents stories based on psychiatry in the cultural park's old mental hospital.

Also, attend the festival's 'Stories in Fire' around Odsherred's natural gems like Veddinge Bakker and Ulkerupsjælene, where you'll be served legends and fairy tales with your evening coffee by the glow of the campfire.

Press apples at Malergården

Autumn is the time for deep red colors and apples, and on October 19, Malergården invites the whole family to an Apple Pressing and Drawing Day in the spirit of autumn. Spend a fresh autumn day gathering apples from the garden's old apple trees, pressing them, and – of course, most importantly – tasting the freshly pressed juice. Afterwards, you can settle down in Malergården's Art School, where visual artist Annemarie Jepsen guides children and the young at heart in the art of drawing.

Don't miss a look around the museum, which was once home to the colorful artist family Swane. The museum opens a window into the Swanes' life, artistic work, and their dreams of transforming Malergården into a self-sufficient farm, an artist's studio, a family home, and a sanctuary in the midst of nature.

Forage in nature's pantry

Nature is a free pantry, and in Odsherred's beautiful autumn landscapes, you can forage for slow dinners in your cottage. Pick wood sorrel, herbs, and of course, mushrooms that sprout from the forest floor in autumn.

For four days during the autumn holiday, you can go mushroom picking with a nature guide who will show you which mushrooms are particularly good to eat. Just bring a basket, a knife, and preferably a small brush. Tickets for adults cost 120 kroner, while children under 12 can join the tour for free.

Dip your own candles and harvest giant pumpkins at Kastanielys

Autumn is a time to light candles and snuggle under blankets, and what candles are better for that than the ones you've dipped yourself? Head towards Sjællands Odde and the candle workshop Kastanielys, which is open every day during the autumn holiday for self-dipping and other (un)cozy activities.

For example, you can try your hand at dipping white candles or coloring candles in your favorite colors. In the fields, you can pick your own Halloween giant pumpkin, and in Kastaniealléen right by the shop, you can gather chestnuts – perfect for a cozy afternoon in the cottage with chestnut figures and pumpkin carving. Just remember practical footwear for a walk in the fields.

Fishing in Sejerø Bay, hiking in the ice age landscape, and farm visits in soft rolling hills. Get inspired for your next cottage trip with our beautiful cottages in Odsherred.
