Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and spend a weekend getaway in Odsherred's summerland. Here you'll find a pocket of freedom in Odsherred's ice age landscape, where time stands still with its cozy coastal towns, charming eateries, and scenic landscapes.
Life in a holiday home is a small break where you can slow down, enjoy time with each other, get sand between your toes, and breathe a little deeper. And what better place for a few days' holiday home getaway than Odsherred, which is no further than a good hour's drive from Copenhagen or a short ferry trip from Jutland to Sjællands Odde?
Odsherred is a true holiday home paradise of wild hilly nature, beautiful beaches, and charming coastal towns. We have put together a guide to the places you should experience, eat, and enjoy nature during your weekend in the northwestern corner of Zealand. Along your way, you will naturally also find a string of wonderful Landfolk holiday homes that can form a very special setting for your weekend trip.
Crab fishing at Rørvig Harbour
Start your weekend in picturesque Rørvig, which is particularly known for its cozy harbour environment. Here, crabs live a dangerous life in the summer months, where children and the young at heart gather on the piers with fish scraps and bamboo poles. Go crabbing and build up your appetite before stopping by Rørvig Fisk & Røgeri, a popular local attraction. Take a seat in the bistro for a fish platter and a beer from Rørvig Bryggeri with a view of the small ferries that shuttle between Rørvig and Hundested.
See Denmark's first parliament and focal point
On the Rørvig peninsula, cultural-historical gems await you: On the heather heath east of the harbour, you can visit Kongestenen, which lets you travel on the wings of history back to the Viking Age and the royal elections that took place in the area. Back then, Rørvig was called Isøre and was home to both Denmark's first parliament and a harbour from which the Vikings embarked on war expeditions.
If you continue along the coast, you will reach Korshage – also known as Denmark's answer to Skagen. Here, Isefjord and Kattegat meet at the tip, where on clear days you can see all the way to Hundested. Walk through the abundance of wild flowers and admire the beautiful old summer villas. Also, make your way to Denmark's midpoint a little further inland, where a stone marks that you are standing right at the country's geographical center.
Experience the charming Harbour Town on Odden
If you drive for about half an hour through Odsherred's rolling hills and idyllic country roads, you will reach the atmospheric Harbour Town on Sjællands Odde. Make your first stop at Havnebyens Kaffebar, which can satisfy any coffee-loving heart with delicious organic coffee and homemade baked goods. Once you've quenched your coffee craving, you can visit the small yellow neighbouring house, Kiosken på Odden, where the shelves are overflowing with cheeses for the breakfast table and biodynamic wines for an evening on the terrace. Stroll further down to the harbour and buy peel-your-own shrimp, smoked goods from their own oven, and fresh fish at the popular family-run fishmonger Odden Fisk.
Feast on flavourful summer food at Birkemosegård
Visit the sustainable farm Birkemosegård, which has been passed down through generations and supplies organic greens to top Copenhagen restaurants. Here you can fill your baskets with fresh greens, natural wine, and local delicacies. And then you can see for yourself at Birkemosegård Køkken, which serves vegetables bursting with flavour from their own fields, supplemented with fish and seafood from Odden Harbour and game from the local area. Settle down at the long tables with views over fields and the Kattegat, and enjoy fresh summer food.
Swim at Sejerø Bay's beautiful beaches
The 155-kilometer long coastline of Sejerø Bay hides some of the country's best bathing beaches, where you can take refreshing morning dips and watch sunsets on warm summer evenings. Cross Denmark's perhaps longest bathing jetty to the fine, child-friendly beach at Korevlerne – a scenic lagoon rich in rare birds, plants, and grazing Galloway cattle. Or continue up the coast to Gudmindrup Strand, which for several years was voted Denmark's best bathing beach for its chalk-white sand, clear blue water, and low sand dunes. Also enjoy Odsherred's perhaps best burger at the beach bar Haveje.
Climb the "Mountains" and get lost in the view at Næsset
During the last ice age over 15,000 years ago, colossal glaciers pushed the landscape around in Odsherred, forming the "Mountains" between Sanddobberne and Ordrup Næs. Feel thousands of years of history under your feet when you climb Odsherred's highest point, the 121-meter high Vejrhøj. At the top, a magnificent 360-degree view opens up over Lammefjorden and Sejerø.
Also, get a good blow of fresh air on a walk around the headland Ordrup Næs, where you can get lost in the soft hilly landscape, greet the grazing flocks of sheep, and see the view over the nearby islands Nekselø and Sejerø. If you are lucky, seals and porpoises take a rest at the tip. If you need a refreshment after your trip through Odsherred's unique ice age landscape, Ishuset Isøre serves homemade organic ice cream.
Visit the beautiful artist's home of the Swane family
Revisit a chapter in Danish art history at Malergården, where the Swanes united family residence and artist's studio. Malergården opened as a museum in 2004 and provides a fine insight into the artist family's colourful and fascinating life, their ideals, dreams, and travels abroad. Here, Sigurd and Agnete Swane wanted to create an artistic paradise; a self-sufficient farm and sanctuary where art and nature flowed together. Visit the artist's home complete with artworks and furniture, and stroll through the garden's floral splendour and old trees with a view over Lammefjorden.
Eat Michelin food by the campfire at Lillero
Complete your weekend getaway with a visit to Lillero at Høve Strand. The eatery Lille B is closely related to the well-known and acclaimed Copenhagen restaurant Formel B. Here, Michelin chefs prepare local greens and fish over a campfire in a very special setting. Sit at the long tables in the glow of the campfire flames and enjoy a cozy and informal meal under the starry sky.
