Landfolk recommends: 6 cosy things to do in a holiday home during the autumn break

Mushroom foraging, pumpkin carving, fun board games, and hot cocoa. Even though the days are getting colder, there are still plenty of fun activities to do outside or cosy things to enjoy indoors when you're on an autumn holiday together. Spend your autumn break doing lots of cosy things as a family, where everyone can have fun. It will definitely be a trip that both young and old will remember fondly.

1. Cook over a campfire

Even though the weather is getting colder, that shouldn't stop you from cooking over a campfire during the autumn break. Whip up some pancake batter and fry pancakes in a pan over the fire. You can also make twist bread on sticks you find in the woods, and with a good campfire pot, you can even toast popcorn or make the easiest dinner ever: one-pot pasta. The kids are sure to enjoy cooking with you over an open fire. Well, except for the part where the twist bread inevitably burns.

2. Go foraging in the woods

If you're staying in a holiday home near a forest, it's a great idea to go foraging. You can find mushrooms and wild herbs to cook with when you return to the holiday home. It's a lovely way to teach the kids about edible mushrooms, which ones are poisonous, what herbs you can find, and how to cook food from nature.

3. Enjoy board games when the weather is unpredictable

As beautiful as autumn weather can be with its stunning colours, it can also be just as unpredictable. Take advantage of the cold days to cosy up indoors with board games, hot cocoa, and togetherness. All our family-friendly holiday homes are equipped with everything you need for a delightful family trip. This means you don’t need to pack games and toys from home—just enjoy picking them off the shelves in the holiday home and get started.

4. Take a dip in a hot tub, sauna, or a refreshing sea swim

Enjoy trying something fun together that you might not have the chance to do at home. Find a holiday home near the sea if you're up for a chilly dip together. Or instead, book one with a hot tub or sauna for a warmer experience.

5. Get creative with autumn leaves and conkers

Autumn is known for its abundance of golden, fallen leaves, and instead of letting them go to waste, you can make beautiful creations with them. For example, create an autumn garland by stringing the leaves together or make a lovely wreath to welcome the next guests to the holiday home. You can also have fun making cute and funny conker animals, where only your imagination sets the limits. To be prepared for the DIY day, it’s a good idea to pack a little glue, string, and beads in advance, so you don’t have to worry about it during the trip.

6. Go screen-free and read together

On a holiday home trip, it's the perfect opportunity—and actually a bit easier—to do something different from what you're used to at home. Discuss in advance that the trip will be screen-free, so everyone knows what to expect. Instead, pack your favourite books or find something exciting on the bookshelf in the holiday home to read together or on your own in the shared living space.

Enjoy!
