Does your heart beat for soft outdoor activities and active experiences in nature? Then Djursland is the perfect place for you and your family to go on a summer house holiday. Here, there are plenty of opportunities for great outdoor activities that provide energy and joy of life. We have put together a guide with 4 activities where you can get your pulse up, feel the wind in your hair, and completely unwind.
Hiking in the distinctive ice age landscape
Djursland is filled with exciting and beautiful hiking trails for the whole family. You'll find both short trips for those with strollers or who need to consider small legs, and for seasoned hikers who don't mind breaking a sweat. A hike in the forest or along the water is an ideal family activity when on a summer house holiday. Here, the senses truly come alive, and the best part is that it's free. It simply requires you to put your heads together and let your imagination take over the planning. However, you can also choose to follow one of the many marked hiking trails, such as the popular Mols Bjerge-sti, which is a 60 km long internationally certified hiking trail in National Park Mols Bjerge along Djursland's north coast.
In Mols Bjerge, you'll find several places with fire pits along the trail where you can enjoy your packed lunch or grill dinner. Bring a bag of marshmallows and find a handful of pointed sticks, and create an unforgettable moment with the family.
Go on a cycling adventure and feel the wind in your hair
Djursland's varied landscape with gentle hills, beautiful coastlines, and winding paths, greatly encourages cycling exploration, where all senses come into play. A trip on two wheels is a fantastic way to experience Djursland's changing landscape. By bike, you can really get around and experience a lot in just a single day. Djursland is filled with exciting and beautiful cycling routes. Here there are routes where you'll feel the wind in your hair, get your pulse up, and get plenty of exercise, but also routes where you can disconnect and just enjoy the beautiful nature and each other.
In other words, the possibilities for cycling experiences on Djursland are many, and there is something for everyone. For example, take a bike ride along the coast and enjoy the breathtaking sea view while feeling the fresh sea breeze on your face. If you're into mountain biking, you should go to Grenaa Plantage, where you'll find Denmark's flattest singletrack route in the technically challenging, but extremely beautiful plantation.
We promise that it's a wonderful feeling when peace and tiredness set in after an active day on the iron horse, and you are guaranteed to enjoy the waiting dinner with a good glass of wine back at the summer house.
Enjoy the peace, silence, and each other's company
Fishing is one of those outdoor activities where you can let your shoulders drop, slow down, and just focus on enjoying each other's company. The fresh sea air and silence provide renewed energy and surplus, which can be much needed in a busy everyday life.
The coast around Jutland's nose, Djursland, offers a wide range of fantastic fishing spots where you can catch dinner while enjoying nature, or simply unwind, find peace, and enjoy the silence by the water. You can fish directly from the beach, from one of the harbors, or in one of Djursland's many lakes. One of the most popular fishing spots is at Fornæs near Grenaa. The fishing spot at Fornæs is Jutland's easternmost point and is known for delivering many – and large – fish. The spot is easily accessible with parking right by Fornæs Lighthouse. The large, desolate area around the lighthouse is also perfect for a stroll if you want a break from fishing. Here, heavy thoughts are literally blown away by the fresh sea wind. Along the coast, you can also often be lucky enough to see both porpoises and seals.
Another good fishing spot on Djursland can be found at the bottom of Aarhus Bay at Hestehaven towards Kalø Vig. Here, the deep water comes close to shore and there are good opportunities to catch, among other things, sea trout in the spring. If you don't have luck at Hestehaven, you can always change position and take a walk to Kalø Castle Ruin, which is located near Hestehaven. Here you will find plenty of delicious fishing water and an extremely beautiful nature along Denmark's longest medieval road, which was built at the same time as the construction of the castle.
Experience Syddjurs' beautiful nature from the water
If you're into water activities with a bit more speed, Djursland is the perfect place for a holiday. With water almost all around, as well as numerous lakes, rivers, and streams, Djursland is an ideal destination for those who enjoy active water experiences. On the peninsula, you'll find many coastal stretches with calm water that are easy to navigate for both children and adults.
There are several stretches along the coast that are suitable for kayaking, paddle-boards / SUP boards, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. The small cozy bay, Begtrup Vig, between the Tved/Skødshoved peninsula and the Helgenæs peninsula, is a perfect place to stand on SUP boards – especially in the innermost part of the bay, where the water is shallow. You can rent SUP boards in Ebeltoft.
The many indented bays and coves, especially along the southern part of Djursland's coast, are also ideal for sea kayaking. Here you can feel the fresh sea wind on your face while enjoying Syddjurs' beautiful nature, which certainly doesn't look any worse from the water side.
