From Ordrup Næs to Nykøbing Sjælland: Where to eat, sleep, and enjoy nature along Odsherred's coast

From Ordrup Næs to Nykøbing Sjælland: Where to eat, sleep, and enjoy nature along Odsherred's coast

We've mapped out a route that takes you through Odsherred's cultural gems, hidden havens, and ice age landscapes. Here, we guide you to unique Landfolk holiday homes where you can stay overnight, and to the places you should see and eat at on your trip.

Odsherred is both a short train or ferry ride and a whole world away from Copenhagen and Aarhus. Here, you can slow down, eat delicious food, take a morning dip at the beach, and feel the wind in your hair atop thousands of years old moraines.

The route starts in Ordrup and leads you along otters, cliff breaks, and untouched coastlines to Nykøbing Sjælland. The trip can easily be adapted to where you wish to stay overnight, and whether you prefer to drive between the coastal towns or follow local cycling routes. Along the way, you will naturally find a range of beautiful Landfolk holiday homes that can set the scene for your trip.

Enjoy the natural pocket of Ordrup Næs

Kick off your holiday home vacation in Ulrik and Astrid's atmospheric 60s-inspired holiday home, located a stone's throw from the headland, forest, and beach. The heart of the holiday home is the large kitchen-dining area, where light streams in from the lush natural plot with fruit trees and nut bushes.

When you're not enjoying morning coffee sheltered by the greenhouse or warm summer evenings in the wilderness bath, you can go for a picnic in Kårup Skov, which extends from the holiday home's garden. Stop by Eventyrdalen, where densely growing ferns, coniferous forest, and beech trees create a magical little hollow, and children can romp on the nature playground. The nearby village of Ordrup exudes genuine West Zealand village charm and houses a grocer, several eateries, and the renowned ice creamery Isøre, which offers homemade organic ice cream.

But most special of all is the nature on the Næsset. Here, flocks of sheep graze on grassy hills, Nekselø and Sejerø rise from the water on the horizon, and seals and porpoises might rest on the tip. Circle the spit on foot, or be captivated by the 360-degree view over the headland and Odsherred's hilly ice age landscape from the top of Vejrhøj – a thousands-year-old mound that bears witness to nature's colossal forces.

Follow Odsherred's backbone to Asnæs

The Højderygstien winds further through the ice age landscape, taking you seven kilometers through Veddinge Bakker's hilly terrain along the mighty moraine arc of Vejrhøjbuen, formed over 15,000 years ago. Stop at the Bronze Age mounds and the Geokids artwork at Shelterpladsen, where 3500 clay masks are scattered across the landscape.

The route is right in the backyard of Louise and Christian's beautiful architectural gem in Asnæs, where you can spend the night. The holiday home is characterized by its clean lines, large panoramic windows, and fine design details that nod back to the house's 70s heritage. In summer, the sun sets over the garden, where children can slide down the secret slide to the lake.

Not far from the holiday home, you'll find a true treasure trove of all the best from Odsherred's moraine hills and fjord bottoms. Swing by Lammefjordens Spisekammer, brimming with vegetables grown on Lammefjorden's fertile mud soil, and drink world-class wine at Vejrhøj Vingård. If you're in the mood for a special gourmet meal, Lille B sets up its tent for you at Høve Strand and offers food cooked over a bonfire and served family-style at long tables.

Settle down at the tip of Sjællands Odde

A twenty-minute drive further through Odsherred's idyllic country roads and rolling hills brings you to Sjællands Odde and Theis and his family's authentic holiday home, where you can lower your shoulders and slow down, enjoying the genuine holiday home atmosphere that permeates the house.

Follow Theis and his family's example, and stop by Odden Fisk, where you can fill your basket with all good things from the sea. Also, swing by Tír Bakery, where former Noma chef Louise Bannon bakes sourdough bread and cinnamon rolls in cozy courtyard surroundings. When Theis and his family are in Havnebyen, they also enjoy visiting Havnebyens Kaffebar, which attracts good folk from near and far with their organic coffee. Together with Kiosken in the neighboring house, which sells biodynamic wine and cheese, Odden has everything an Odsherred holiday home could wish for.

Get freshly baked bread from Tir Bakery. It's the best bread we've ever had.

With water on all sides, you're never far from your next sea bath on Odden. Spend warm days at the beach, just a few minutes' walk from the holiday home, or explore the coast's beaches. On the way home, Theis and his family recommend picking up dinner at the biodynamic farm Birkemosegård or burgers from Olgas Grill. Eat in the evening sun on the terrace, and end the day around the bonfire with stargazing and marshmallows.

Feast on fish and seafood, and visit Rørvig's natural gems

Our route around Odsherred naturally also takes you past Rørvig – the scenic peninsula with its untouched beaches, sandy dune plantations, and cozy harbor town. Start your holiday home vacation in Rørvig's lively harbor, where children and the young at heart fish for crabs on the pier, and small ferries chug in and out. Join the crab race, or take a break with a delicious lunch in the glass pergola at Rørvig Fisk og Røgeri.

Rørvig holds a string of special nature experiences. At Hov Vig bird sanctuary, a total of 267 bird species have been registered, and you can enjoy the quiet beauty of the meadows and spot sea eagles from the bird hide. Don't miss the Sandplantagen, nestled behind the dunes with its gnarled trees, sandy soil, and scent of resin. If you fancy a dip, the Kattegat awaits you behind the dunes.

End the day with a gourmet meal at Rørvig Kro, renowned nationwide for both its flavorful food and its characteristic tiles made by artist Bjørn Wiinblad. If you want to stay overnight in Rørvig, you won't find finer settings than Ane and her family's characteristic pink holiday home in the middle of the forest. Light streams into the conservatory, offering a fantastic view of the forest and garden, and the special decor with an eye for detail is balm for any holiday home soul.

Explore the limestone quarry and go pick-your-own in Nykøbing Sjælland

Conclude your holiday home trip along the coast at Sebastian and Anna's intimate little sanctuary in nature near Nykøbing Sjælland. The bright holiday home, surrounded by tall apple, plum, and cherry trees, is perfect for a couple's retreat or a lovely getaway for a small family.

It's not far from here to the old limestone quarry in Klint and Klintebjerg. So grab your thermos and get a good blow of fresh air on a walk in the peninsula's rugged nature, where 35-meter-high cliffs rise above the sea. If you're more in the mood for a beach day, you can settle down on a beach bank and enjoy the crystal blue water at Gudmindrup Strand, one of Denmark's most beautiful beaches, just a 15-minute drive away.

If you miss city life, you can visit the market town of Nykøbing Sjælland with its bustling main street and lovely eateries. But out in the countryside, small local farm shops and country stores also await you. Get morning bread and sweets from the bread cabinet at micro-bakery Sølt, located in the eco-community Under himlen. Or get some fresh air with pick-your-own days at the fruit orchard of Nygårdens Gårdbutik.
