Guide: The 3 best fishing spots on Djursland
With its many lakes, streams, and long coastline, Djursland is an ideal destination for a summer house holiday with fishing. The peninsula is particularly known for its many sea trout, but there are also ample opportunities to catch a wide range of other fish species. If the fish aren't biting, you can always enjoy Djursland's breathtaking nature and experience the calm and liberating silence found on the east-facing peninsula.
Fish in a drained lake
In the middle of Djursland lies the drained lake, Kolindsund. The lake has been drained since the 19th century, as it is continuously drained by the canals Nordkanalen, Midterkanalen, and Sydkanalen, which flow into the Kattegat near Grenaa. The lake is not worth much for fishing, but the two canals, Nordkanalen and Sydkanalen, on the other hand, have some of Denmark's most productive fishing waters.
Here you can catch a wide range of different fish species, including sea trout, pike, coarse fish, rainbow trout, bream, roach, eel, and perch. You can position yourself almost anywhere along the Nord- and Sydkanalen with your fishing rod. Fishing is prohibited at Midtkanalen. Nordkanalen in particular is a popular fishing spot for catching sea trout and rainbow trout. Kolindsund is not only suitable for angling, but also for hiking in the beautiful natural area. There are several good hiking routes in the area around Kolind, if you fancy a change from fishing, or just want to combine the fishing trip with experiencing the area's attractions. Especially the four Kløverstier are recommended.
Catch sea trout on Syddjurs
If you dream of hooking a large, shiny coastal trout, you won't find better opportunities than on Djursland. Along the coast of Djursland, the good fishing spots are strung like pearls on a string. Especially the southern part of the peninsula has a reputation for being one of the best places in the country for sea trout fishing. And of course, it doesn't hurt that the area is also incredibly beautiful. At the southernmost tip of the Helgenæs peninsula on Mols lies Sletterhage Fyr. By the beautiful old lighthouse, the water is deep and the current is strong. This provides good hunting conditions for sea trout and thus good opportunities for you to bring home a good catch for dinner in the summer house. It is also possible to catch other fish species, such as cod, mackerel, garfish, and flatfish.
The beautiful surroundings of the historic lighthouse also invite you for a brisk walk, or just a short stroll around the lighthouse. Here you can take a break from fishing and eat an ice cream from Ishuset Sletterhage, while enjoying the view over Aarhus Bay. The Helgenæs-Fuglsø area is a true little gem in Denmark. The area has an incredibly varied nature, offering both high landslide cliffs, foam-spraying pebble beaches, and breathtaking views along the 27 km long coastline.
You can find several Landfolk summer houses on Helgenæs, so the fishing trip can be combined with a wonderful summer house holiday in beautiful surroundings. Right out on the southernmost tip of the peninsula, for example, you will find Karen and Hans Jørgen's summer house, which is no less than 50 meters from the sea. The summer house is equipped with both a fire pit and a grill on the nice wooden terrace, so there are plenty of opportunities to prepare the day's catch in the evening.
Fishing and crab catching in Udbyhøj
However, it is not only the southern part of Djursland that is suitable for sea trout fishing. Norddjurs also has several fine areas where the chances of getting a bite are good. The small village, Udbyhøj, in northern Djursland, is located on the south side of Randers Fjord's mouth into the Kattegat. Here, the chances of catching one or more of the migrating sea trout from Randers Fjord are very good. The mouth at Udbyhøj forms a bottleneck that many of the sea trout pass through.
Fishing in Norddjurs is known as real "summer house fishing", as it teems with both small and large summer houses along the north coast's beautiful bathing beaches and cozy coastal towns. You will naturally also find several Landfolk summer houses in the area, such as Charlotte's cozy little wooden summer house, which is only 200 meters from both a child-friendly beach and several good fishing spots.
Not far from the summer house, on the other side of Randers Fjord, lies Udbyhøj Marina, which is a beautiful and cozy little harbor with an associated beautiful sandy beach. You can take the cozy and nostalgic cable ferry, Udbyhøj Færgen, across. At the marina, it is possible to fish with a fishing rod or fish with nets for crabs along the harbor bridges. If you have not brought your own equipment for the children's crab catching, you can borrow free gear at the harbor's "Grejbase", which has fishing nets, binoculars, and stereo magnifiers.
