Tourist tax in Italy
All municipalities in Italy can now introduce a tourist tax. This was decided by the Italian government back in 2011, but not all municipalities have actually introduced it in their area. In some cities, you only pay tourist tax during the high season, and in most places, children are exempt.
What is tourist tax called in Italian?
In Italian, tourist tax is actually called "imposta di soggiorno", although it is often referred to as "tassa di soggiorno".
Two words for the same thing. It depends on whether you refer to it as a tax or a fee.
But the conclusion is the same – it is an amount you must pay on site for accommodation.
How to pay tourist tax "Tassa di soggiorno" in Italy
This tourist tax is often paid directly to the accommodation by the traveler upon arrival.
It is the owner's/reception's responsibility to collect the tourist tax for the municipality and forward the amount. You can, if necessary, ask for a receipt that you have paid your tourist tax.
"Tassa di soggiorno" will be written on the receipt.
How much is the mandatory tourist tax in Italy?
The amount to be paid depends on whether you rent a holiday home, a B&B, or a hotel. For hotels, the amount depends on the number of stars.
The tourist tax is a personal tax and is calculated based on the number of nights you stay.
There is a difference from municipality to municipality as to whether you have to pay at all. The amount itself also varies, just as in some places you pay for a maximum of 3 nights (even if you stay longer) while some municipalities charge for a maximum of 10 nights.
The individual municipality can freely change this tourist tax. Since there are many very small municipalities in Italy, it is not possible for us to state the exact amount of this tourist tax under each accommodation.
However, we are talking about smaller amounts. Around EUR 1-1.50/night for adults when renting holiday homes up to EUR 5/night for adults for a 5-star hotel.
