Lace up your hiking boots: 3 scenic hiking trails on Djursland

Lace up your hiking boots: 3 scenic hiking trails on Djursland

Nowhere else in Denmark, other than Mols Bjerge National Park, can you experience so many hilltops and have an unobstructed view as far as the eye can see on your hike. But Mols Bjerge is not the only place you should visit if you've laced up your hiking boots. We've put together a guide with three scenic hiking trails that you should embark on during your cottage trip to Jutland's nose.

Enjoy the view from Jernhatten

Jernhatten is one of the more special and unknown excursion destinations on Djursland. Here you can experience winding troll trees, hilly terrain, scrub and forest, as well as a beautiful beach. Jernhatten is a protected hill and viewpoint approximately 50 meters above sea level, located on the outskirts of Mols Bjerge, east of Stubbe Sø. If you follow the path from the parking lot, which consists of a small gravel road and flattened grass, you first walk along a beautiful, green country road with a small forest area in the background. From here, the journey begins to go uphill, and this is where the place shows its charm. On the narrow and winding paths on the way up to the viewpoint, you can experience large gnarled trees that almost dramatically envelop the path – a true local wilderness.

When you reach the top, you are rewarded with a fantastic view over the water. In the distance, you can see the small uninhabited island, Hjelm. From the top, you can either choose to continue down the path, or take a staircase down to the beach, which is a beautiful stone-and-seaweed beach. The path, with its approximately 1.2 km, is an obvious little 'extra trip' to take in conjunction with a hike in Mols Bjerge.

Right at the foot of Jernhatten, and with panoramic views over the Kattegat, you will find Daniel, Sofie and Anna's beautiful, newly renovated holiday home. The holiday home is an old sea mill from 1677 that has been renovated, and today constitutes a lovely holiday home with space for the whole family.

Tour around Mols Hoved

The Tved/Skødshoved peninsula on Mols in the southern part of Djursland is a small hidden gem, which contains lots of beautiful nature, lovely bathing beaches and steep dunes. On the southernmost coast of the peninsula lies the approximately 20 meter high and 2½ kilometer long cliff, Mols Hoved. It is fantastically beautiful here, and yet it is an area where you rarely meet many others. The place is somewhat of a local secret.

There are many fantastic walking and running tours in the area around Mols Hoved. Here you can feel how the land meets the sea with steep slopes and open expanses. There is a rich wildlife, with the possibility of seeing both badgers and red deer when darkness falls, if you take an evening walk.

One of the best hiking routes on the peninsula is a circular tour around Mols Hoved, which is a trip of approximately 5 km depending on where you start. If you live in a holiday home on the Tved/Skødshoved peninsula, you can start the circular tour wherever you like. If you are by car, however, we recommend that you park at Isgård Gods.

On the circular tour, you will truly experience the wild Danish nature at its best. You walk along small paths, country roads and hilly island landscapes with beautiful views from both the waterline and from the ridges. The almost 50 meter high cliffs are a very special sight. Beautiful wild flowers grow down the cliffs, such as yellow everlasting, mullein and biting stonecrop, and at the top of the slopes you can see the small, round nesting holes of the sand martins.

On the Tved/Skødshoved peninsula you will find several Landfolk holiday homes. If you want to stay close to Mols Hoved, you can stay in Line and Anders' charming wooden house with a magical view over Aarhus Bay. If you prefer to stay close to the beach, Tina and Søren's holiday home in Knebel is only one minute from Skødshoved Beach, which is not only the best bathing beach on the peninsula, but one of Djursland's best.

A beautiful hike in maritime surroundings

On the Helgenæs peninsula, Sletterhage Lighthouse provides the setting for a wonderful maritime hike in beautiful natural surroundings. Here you can experience the dry Helgenæs landscape with wild flower fields, fruit groves and wide open skies. There are plenty of opportunities for beautiful walks, both along the water and in the forest, and you can always find a place where you are completely by yourself.

The approximately 6 km long hike starts at the tip of Helgenæs by Sletterhage Lighthouse. Here you can enjoy the view over the sea and the landscape. From the old lighthouse, the route follows the beach until you reach Tyskertårnet, which you can walk up to via a path from the beach. From Tyskertårnet you can enjoy the view over the southern islands of Kattegat, Hjelm, Samsø and Tunø.

On the remaining part of the route, you will pass, among other things, Klæbjerg Overdrev, which is a beautiful hilly landscape with a view over Lushage. Finally, you will pass the almost 50 meter high Lusklit, which leads you back to Sletterhage Lighthouse.

There are also many other exciting excursion destinations on the Helgenæs peninsula, such as a trip to Ellemandsbjerget, which is the highest point on Helgenæs. Here you can experience a phenomenal 270-degree view and see Ebeltoft, Samsø, Odder and Aarhus. You can also visit the northern part of Helgenæs and go to Kongsgårde, which has a lovely wide sandy beach and good shopping opportunities.

There is much to see and experience on Helgenæs, which is impossible to cover in just a single day. Fortunately, you will find several Landfolk holiday homes on the beautiful peninsula, such as Janus and Matias' unique country estate, which is perfect for large families or couples of friends. The holiday home is located right on the southern tip of Helgenæs, just a stone's throw from Sletterhage Lighthouse.
