Culture on the coast: What to see and experience in Odsherred
Art days, aristocratic dinner, and folk high school spirit. Odsherred is brimming with cultural initiatives that you can see and experience on your next cottage trip. Here's our guide to four places you should visit if your trip takes you to Odsherred.
Gourmet experiences in Odsherred
When it's summer and you're on holiday, it's time to treat yourself. You do this by relaxing, enjoying time with loved ones you don't see often, but you also do it by eating a lot of good food. This can be done in cozy cottages, but it can also be done at the fantastic Dragsholm Castle.
The castle has an 800-year history, having served as a residence for nobility and royalty, but today it is a place with restaurants and a castle hotel. If you're into gourmet, you should visit Dragsholm Castle's gourmet restaurant, where you can truly taste Nordic cuisine in the most beautiful surroundings. The focus is on local produce, so herbs and vegetables come from the kitchen garden. This all ties into the regional history upon which the castle is built. If you prefer something more informal and down-to-earth, you should try the bistro at the castle. Even though you can relax at the bistro, the concept is still the same as the gourmet kitchen: local and close.
You can also visit the castle's food house, where you can truly enjoy the surroundings with a good glass of wine while satisfying your hunger. There's a large selection of wines, with something guaranteed to suit your taste.
Go on a folk high school adventure
Perhaps you've attended an efterskole or folk high school yourself and miss that special atmosphere found in such places. Perhaps you've never tried either but dream of it. In that case, you should take a summer course at Vallekilde Højskole, where both young and old can experience the folk high school spirit. Vallekilde Højskole is located in Odsherred and is one of Denmark's first folk high schools. Together with your family, you can experience morning assemblies, singing from the Folk High School Songbook, fun activities for everyone, lectures, children's cinema, and bright summer nights.
Instead of going home immediately, you can continue to experience the magic of the area by grabbing a cottage stay in Fårevejle. Here you can, among other things, experience hosts Sara and Nikolai's idyllic raspberry cottage with a thatched roof, fire pit, and outdoor shower. It's an ideal place to recharge after a busy summer folk high school experience.
A summer with a festival
In Vig, there's always a festival, and this summer is no exception. Experience Rasmus Seebach, Christopher, Phlake, Gnags, Andreas Odbjerg, and many more artists at the festival. Vig Festival is a place for everyone, so you can easily go with both family and friends. There are food and drink stalls at the festival, so you can keep going all day and enjoy all your favorite music.
Camping is available at the festival, so you're close to music and experiences, but if you need to retreat, we suggest you rent a cottage near the festival. You can get to Asnæs by car in ten minutes or by bike in 23 minutes. By staying in a cottage nearby, you and those you're with at the festival have the opportunity to recharge after a whole day of music, food, and fun. You can read a good book in the evening and, not least, wash off the festival grime. This way, you can arrive fresh and well-rested for the next festival day without compromising on sleep and energy.
Art Days in Odsherred
If you love to see and be inspired by art, then you must experience Art Days in Odsherred. You can meet the artists and see the execution of their works from start to finish. Here you can experience everything from glass art to quirky and colorful works. The Art Days are spread throughout Odsherred, so it's also an excellent opportunity to see the area while driving to the various exhibitions. Stop, for example, when you see a beautiful natural area and take a walk. You can also make a pit stop by the coast and jump into the blue waves. Make sure to bring provisions in the form of food and drink, so you have energy to look at art all day.
