6 brand new places you need to know about in Odsherred
A turquoise wine truck, sauna at the tip of Odden, campfire food by Michelin chefs, and a micro-bakery. Odsherred is known for its historic landscapes and ancient finds – but is also much more than that. We tip you off to six cool new places and initiatives that have sprung up in recent years in Zealand's northwestern corner.
Get thoroughly warmed up in Ydreland's sauna
Ydreland is a social and sustainable association and a working community that aims to create green and vibrant settings for life on Sjællands Odde. One of the association's initiatives is the sauna close to the tip of Odden, which is open and accessible to everyone and can be accessed via Plantagevej. In the small wooden sauna, you can get thoroughly warmed up after a refreshing winter dip or watch the sunset over Sejerøbugten after an evening swim at dusk. Just remember to book a time and bring your own firewood and kindling.
Visit new bakers in the summer country
In recent years, new bakeries have sprung up in Odsherred. On Sjællands Odde, former Noma chef Louise Bannon bakes biodynamic and organic sourdough bread for people from near and far on a 115-year-old farmhouse. The old Nordic grain varieties are sourced from local farms, while the name Tír comes from Louise's homeland in Ireland and means 'land and region'. If you visit Tír Bakery, you will probably come home with your arms full of sourdough bread and cinnamon rolls. But arm yourself with patience and come early, as the Tír bakery is well-visited.
If your summer house is closer to Nykøbing Sjælland, you can instead stop by the newly opened micro-bakery Sølt. Here, the bread cabinet overflows with sourdough bread, cinnamon rolls, raspberry slices, and cookies every Friday and Saturday. The name Sølt is a contraction of 'sødt' (sweet) and 'salt' (salt), and the bakery is located at 'Under himlen' (Under the sky) in a fine little eco-community of diverse and colorful houses.
Hop on your iron horse on the Ice Age Route
In 2020, the Ice Age Route opened – a 220-kilometer long cycling route through the cultural-historical Ice Age landscape from Odsherred in the north to Sorø in the south. If you take the first stage, a 43-kilometer route will lead you along the Isefjord from Nykøbing Sjælland to Holbæk. Make a stop at the Litorina Cliff, which was formed 8800 years ago, where you might be lucky enough to find marine fossils. Also see the Ulkerup Souls, the nine hooded sculptures representing the mysterious disappearance of the Ulkerup people. The route also takes you past the Sidinge and Audebo Dams, which enclose Lammefjorden and provide very special conditions for growing vegetables.
Hop on your bike and take a day trip through the very early history of Denmark, where colossal ice masses shaped the landscape. The route is marked with signs, and Odsherred's cozy towns and farm shops invite pit stops along the way. The most energetic can also follow the fifth stage of the route through dead-ice landscapes, meltwater plains, and terminal moraine landscapes from Jyderup to Nykøbing Sjælland.
Enjoy southern European atmosphere and Danish grapes at the turquoise wine truck
Tap into a true Greek taverna atmosphere at the turquoise wine truck at Hvidelykkegård on Odden. Settle down among rows of grapevines on the south-facing slope and be served the cool "Jørgen" white wine or the sparkling "Perle" made from green grapes from Ørnberg Vin.
The wine truck is a local attraction started by 22-year-old Ásdis Rún Esbjerg Jensen, who grew up on Hvidelykkegård. When the corona epidemic put a spoke in the wheel of Ásdis' gap year travels, she instead threw herself into transforming an old container into a mobile wine bar. Here she serves Ørnberg wines and light dishes with all the best from Zealand's treasure trove: For example, eat cheese from Kiosken på Odden, sausages from Nr. Asmindrup butcher, and bread from Tír Bakery.
Feast on campfire food prepared by Michelin chefs
Perhaps some will know Formel B, the renowned restaurant in Copenhagen adorned with a Michelin star. In 2022, the restaurant's northwestern Zealand little sister Lille B set up its tents at the Lillero campsite on Høve Strand. Here you can visit the beach bar and restaurant and enjoy a good cup of coffee, a glass of wine or beer, and a meal. Lille B offers great taste experiences from Odsherred's fjord bottoms, bays, and moraine hills, and although the restaurant has Michelin ancestry, the concept is unpretentious. Take a seat at the long table and enjoy a meal prepared over a campfire and served in the glow of the flames.
Take the portal back to the Bronze Age
Let yourselves be led into history and back to perhaps the most important find in Danish history. The newly opened Sun Chariot Find Site leads you along a gravel path to an adorned four-meter-high iron portal and art installation that tells the story of the Sun Chariot's cosmology and the people of Odsherred 3500 years ago. The portal shows how Bronze Age people believed that the sun was pulled across the sky on an eternal journey by a divine horse.
Continue along a winding path system through a Bronze Age-like landscape to the actual find site in the scenic Trundholm Mose. Here, the national treasure with the gold-plated sun disk and six-wheeled chariot was sacrificed so that the Bronze Age people could ensure that the sun would sail through the underworld. At precisely the same spot 3000 years later, the Sun Chariot was found by chance when Frederik Willumsen stumbled upon it with his meadow plow. Listen to the podcast about the Sun Chariot Find Site, and let yourselves be absorbed by the landscape, the story, and the Bronze Age people's belief in the magic of the sun.
