Here's how we assess whether a property is a good fit for a Landfolk holiday home

Discover how our expert team selects the holiday homes featured on landfolk.com. It's not about luxury or expensive design choices. We highlight homes that stand out with their unique and personal decor.

We always evaluate holiday homes based on a well-defined set of criteria, including whether the home is located in a picturesque area open to nature and if it is decorated in a way that appeals to our guests.

For example, we know that our guests prefer holiday homes where the interior aesthetic choices are consistent. This often means homes that feel personal and that the owners use themselves when they are not rented out. The overall atmosphere is enhanced by unique choices, such as objects found in art markets or flea markets. This does not mean it has to be expensive or luxurious; it is most important that the overall aesthetic is coherent and welcoming.

It looks luxurious without being so, it's simply very well done with lovely decor and soul, and a personal style and charm. – Dorte, Landfolk guest

Above all, we prioritize decor that reflects character and personality, as opposed to decorations dominated by furniture moved into the holiday home simply because there was no room elsewhere – we all know what that looks like and the feeling it evokes. It is more pleasant to spend time in a refined space where the decor and layout are thoughtful and cared for, and we know that this is exactly what our guests are looking for.

In this article, you will find 5 different types of holiday homes with varied characteristics, but all are good examples of places that match what Landfolk guests are looking for. These homes are highly sought after by our guests when they are looking for a pleasant place for their getaway.

The common thread among all these homes is that they offer a true, unique experience, and not just a mundane place to stay for the holidays.

1. Classic Country Homes

What we look for: Quality solutions and decor made of flea market finds, trinkets, and charming, cozy small details creating a warm and personal atmosphere.

I was looking for a holiday home where more attention was paid to details than what you usually get from other rental agencies. – Susanne, Landfolk guest

2. Historic, Provencal, Charming and Tastefully Decorated Holiday Homes

Historic Holiday Homes | Landfolk Historic Holiday Homes | Landfolk

These historic, Provencal, or charming homes have something special about their construction. They tell the story of the lives lived within them. Often surrounded by protected nature, original details (exposed stones and beams) are preserved. This means that these holiday homes are filled with the soul and charm that our guests truly appreciate.

What we look for: Preserved original details and decor that complements the style of the house. This creates a more complete experience than a historic house decorated in a completely different style – which can break the charm of the place.

We chose to book our stay through Landfolk because they are well-located private homes rather than impersonal and charmless pool houses. – Lotte, Landfolk guest

3. Modern Holiday Homes

Clean lines and a touch of minimalism characterize many newly built holiday homes at Landfolk. Their decor is personal and reflects the hosts who use the home themselves when it is not rented out.

What we look for: A brand new house doesn't always have the same charm as an older holiday home. That's why we look for homes with a thoughtful layout, quality materials, and well-considered details that enhance the cozy atmosphere.

We were tired of uninspired holiday homes with leather furniture. Therefore, we looked for holiday homes with more soul and stumbled upon Landfolk. – Peter, Landfolk guest

4. Wooden Cabins

Staying in a wooden cabin can be a very special experience. It creates a warm and cozy atmosphere that often contrasts with the homes we live in every day.

What we look for: Special or authentic decor that matches the uniqueness of the cabin's style – if a cabin is furnished only with new IKEA furniture, part of the experience many of our guests are looking for is lost. Wooden details, rustic furniture, and other well-thought-out elements make wooden cabins a complete holiday experience.

You want something nice and personal when you book a holiday home, not leather sofas and sterile rooms. I think Landfolk hit the nail on the head there. – Jacob, Landfolk guest

5. Architectural holiday home

In addition to an ideal location close to nature, the kitchen is particularly important to our guests. In a 2022 analysis, 89% of respondents indicated that it was quite or very important for a holiday home to be equipped with a good kitchen for cooking. Landfolk's architectural holiday homes appeal to guests who appreciate unique homes, rarely furnished in a very conventional way.

What we look for: That a lot of personality and soul have been put into the decor to match the effort put into the architectural expression of the house. Perhaps there is a particularly beautiful kitchen, quality furniture, or design objects that complement the unique architecture of the house.

Summer houses for rent often seem like a money-making machine and feel impersonal or cluttered with too many things that are just there because they shouldn't clutter 'at home'. Landfolk seems to be a place where coziness is a priority. – Sharmila, Landfolk guest
