Guide to a cottage holiday on Sjællands Odde

Sjællands Odde, nestled between the Kattegat and Sejerø Bay, is known for its rolling hills, deep blue waters on all sides, and charming Havneby. We've gathered a string of great tips from our local Landfolk hosts for your cottage trip to Odden.

Perhaps you once sped past Sjællands Odde to catch the ferry to Jutland. But there are plenty of good reasons to slow down and enjoy cottage life on Odden. On the peninsula, nestled between the Kattegat and Sejerø Bay, country life is cozy and informal, the vegetables taste better than those you can get at the local supermarket, and the water, forest, and sky are clearer than in the city. Here, we guide you to the places you should see, eat, and experience on your cottage trip to Odden.

Buy flavorful greens and specialties at Birkemosegård

Recommended by Trine and Kasper.

Trine and Kasper love to cook their own food in the cottage and shop locally. One of the most well-known and beloved places among the residents of Odden is Birkemosegård. This sustainable farm has been passed down through generations and was a pioneer of the idea that vegetables should come directly from the soil and not be filled with additives.

Visit Birkemosegård and come home with arms full of organic greens, organic specialties, and natural wine from the farm shop. Also, enjoy a delicious summer meal at Birkemosegård Køkken, which serves game from the local area, fresh fish and seafood from Odden Havn, and of course, seasonal vegetables bursting with flavor from their own fields.

Get fresh fish to take home for lunch

Recommended by Pernille and Jakob.

At the lively harbor of Odden, you'll find the family-run fish shop [Odden Fisk] (https://www.oddenfisk.dk/), a popular local attraction. Here, Pernille and Jakob often pick up fresh fish for their cottage from the selection of peel-your-own shrimp, homemade seafood salads, smoked goods from their own oven, and fresh fish. Sit down at the tables and benches and enjoy fish cakes or crispy fried fish fillets fresh from the pan.

Explore a 75-year-old shipwreck at Gniben

Recommended by Jeanett.

If the weather permits, Jeanett and her family love to spend the day at the beautiful child-friendly beach at Gniben. Here, at the very tip of Sjællands Odde, you'll find a unique natural area with steep cliffs, grazing sheep, and colorful sunsets over the water. Here you can relax the day away on the beach, take long walks along the coast, or catch crabs at the water's edge. And children and the young at heart can explore the shipwreck that lies stranded a few meters from the waterline. It has been left untouched since it ran aground in 1947, providing the perfect setting for water games.

Drink organic coffee in cozy surroundings

Recommended by Lene.

The people behind Havnebyens Kaffebar missed a really good cup of coffee on Sjællands Odde. That's why they opened the Kaffebar on the main street, which has since become a favorite among locals and cottage guests. In the summer months, the terrace under the blooming cherry tree is particularly lovely, and there's not just coffee, but also food and homemade cinnamon rolls on the menu. Don't miss events like pottery firing, live concerts, and Persian-inspired dinners.

Find local delicacies and fill your glass at Kiosken

Recommended by Anne Katrine.

Anne Katrine often stops by the Kaffebar's neighbor, Kiosken på Odden. Here, new life has been breathed into the town's old and long-closed kiosk with a new one that serves exquisite delicacies and biodynamic wine. In the small yellow house with the green roll-up awning, Matthew and Markus are ready to help you find cheese and local treats for breakfast or a cheese board, and wines of all kinds for dinner or enjoyment in the afternoon sun.

Hunt for flea market gold at Tuskemarkedet

Recommended by Trine and Allan.

A short twenty-minute drive from Sjællands Odde lies Denmark's largest outdoor flea market, Tuskemarkedet. When Trine and Allan are at their cottage, they often stop by the market and usually come home with lovely flea market finds. Perhaps you're looking for romantic antiques for the cottage or retro gold in vibrant colors to complete the decor? Or maybe you need to tap into a genuine market atmosphere with red sausages and bumper cars? Tuskemarkedet has it all and more.

Get the world's best bread at Tír-bageren

Recommended by Theis.

Get freshly baked bread at Tír-bageren in the 115-year-old farmhouse on Odden. Louise was previously a chef at the world-renowned Noma, but for the past few years, she has made an art form out of baking long-fermented sourdough bread on Sjællands Odde. The bread is organic and made with flour from ancient Nordic grain varieties, and if you ask Theis and his family, it's the best bread you'll ever taste. The freshly baked goods are in high demand, so come early in the day. If you're lucky, you can get a cup of coffee at Kaffe Kim's espresso cart while you wait in line.

Experience the ice age landscape in Veddinge Bakker

Recommended by Malou and Jan.

Malou and Jan often drive the half-hour to Odsherreds Geopark – Denmark's only UNESCO Global Geopark, selected for its unique geological heritage, its ice age landscape, and characteristic terminal moraines. One of the terminal moraines is the Vejrhøjbuen, which stands as a 121-meter-high testament to the mighty movement of glaciers through the landscape. Follow the seven-kilometer route along Højderygstien, which leads you through hilly terrain from Veddinge Bakker to Duttehøje, past Bronze Age mounds and the geopark's art installation with 3500 clay masks created by schoolchildren.

Curious about Odsherred Geopark? First, take the tour with Mikael Bertelsen through the ice age landscape before you set off on your own trip.

Winter bathing at Ydreland's sauna

Ydreland is a community of like-minded local enthusiasts who want to create green and vibrant settings for life in Odsherred. They have built a sauna by Sejerø Bay, which is open and accessible to everyone. Take a refreshing sea bath and enjoy the warmth in the sauna and the most beautiful view over the bay. You'll find the sauna at Plantagevej and can reserve a time here. Just remember to bring your own firewood and kindling.
