3 beaches on Djursland that are perfect for families with children

Cottage holidays with children are the best. Open skies, food over a campfire, board games, bare feet, and just lots of time to enjoy each other. Cottage holidays also mean water experiences. Being at the beach with the children is fun and provides fantastic experiences. There's plenty of space, and sand and water make for a wonderful playground. We've put together a guide with 3 beaches on Djursland that are perfect for families with children.

Wide beaches, shallow water, and chalk-white sand. On Djursland's over 250 km long coast, you'll find some of Denmark's absolute best beaches. Most have the Blue Flag, which is your guarantee of clean bathing water and other good facilities at the beach.

Let the children loose with peace of mind at Følle Strand

The first beach in our guide is Følle Strand, located south of Rønde on the southern part of Djursland, facing Kalø Vig. Kalø Vig forms the northern end of Aarhus Bay and is enclosed by land to both the west and east. This means that Følle Strand is a south-facing beach where the water is calm, flat, and without strong currents. You can therefore let the children loose with peace of mind.

Følle Strand was awarded the Blue Flag in 2022, which means the water is clean, life-saving and first-aid equipment is available, as well as toilet facilities and other good conditions. On the beach, right by the water, you'll also find the ice cream shop, Ishuset Følle Strand, if you need to cool down with a delicious ice cream. The ice cream shop also sells various take-away items such as sausages, burgers, and fries.

Just a stone's throw from Følle Strand, in Rønde, you'll find Anders' child-friendly cottage with an outdoor shower and a view over Kalø Vig. The large, lovely cottage has room for the whole family. There are also plenty of toys for the children, so they can really have fun. When Anders and his family are at the cottage, they enjoy taking a swim in Følle Bay at Følle Strand, or catching crabs from the bathing jetty. After a fantastic swim in the sea, you can go home to the cottage and take a nice shower in the outdoor shower while enjoying the view over the water.

Shallow paddling water for the little ones at Ahl Strand

On the Hasnæs peninsula south of Ebeltoft lies Ahl. Ahl Vig is one of the most beautiful places on Djursland if you want to experience a genuine Danish mosaic landscape, which has become a rarity. In Ahl, you'll also find Ahl Strand, which is a cozy child-friendly sandy beach with shallow, warm water and sandbanks. At low tide, you can experience large sand islands emerging. All along the beach, there's shallow paddling water – perfect for the very little ones. The beach also has a rich birdlife, so there's always something to look at. The beach is also worth a visit in the evening, where you can hunt for amber with amber lanterns.

On the Hasnæs peninsula, you'll find Line and Henrik's black wooden cottage, which is just a two-minute walk from Ahl Strand. When Line and Henrik are at the cottage with their two children, they often go to the beach for a dip or a trip on SUP boards.

When you're on a cottage holiday on Hasnæs, you're also very close to the cozy, atmospheric town of Ebeltoft, which has many good eateries, shops, and attractions. In Ebeltoft, there are beautiful half-timbered houses, cobblestones, and blooming hollyhocks. It hardly gets more idyllic.

Build sandcastles at Grenaa Strand

In the middle of Djursland, and close to the cozy market town of Grenaa, you'll find one of Denmark's best beaches, Grenaa Strand. Grenaa Strand is a very child-friendly beach with shallow water depth and the finest sand, inviting you to build sandcastles. As an east-facing coast, the beach is sheltered from the strong westerly wind. The water is therefore calm and without currents. In the summer, there are many activities on the beach, such as beach volleyball. There is also a rescue tower and coastal lifeguards on the beach.

If you like to fish, you'll also find one of Denmark's best fishing spots for sea trout fishing a little south of the beach at Havknude Flak. There are rarely bathers here, so the opportunities for a peaceful fishing trip are good.

Only 300 meters from Grenaa Strand, you'll find Annelene and Søren's cozy family cottage with room for the whole family. When Annelene and Søren have their grandchildren visiting, much of the time is spent at the beach, where they relax, swim, and play. If the children need a little extra pampering, there are short distances to various animal parks, Djurs Sommerland, and Kattegat Centret.
