Experience Denmark's coziest market towns: The history behind the old trading towns on Djursland
If you're taking a trip through the summer landscape of Djursland, you should definitely visit the old market towns such as Ebeltoft and Grenaa, as they are brimming with charm and history. Here's our guide to the towns.
A trip to Ebeltoft
Explore the Clover Paths
If you're into history and culture, you should explore the 2.5-kilometer route that runs through Ebeltoft. Here you can see The Old Town Hall, where there is free admission to all exhibitions. The town hall dates from 1789 and its courtroom still functions as a place where civil weddings take place. If you stop by on a Saturday, you might spot a wedding. Further down the route, you'll pass Maltfabrikken (The Malt Factory), which today forms the setting for a cultural meeting place. In the past, the factory was owned by merchant S.B. Lundberg, who produced malt, but today the factory is better known as the people's factory. Here you can experience concerts, street food, and exhibitions today. You'll also pass Ebeltoft Church, which adorns the town with its distinctive and harmonious architecture.
Go exploring for antiques
A trip to Ebeltoft is a historical experience, and therefore it's also obvious to take a piece of history home with you. While we can't promise you'll find artifacts from the 16th century, it's worth exploring the town's antique dealers. Here you can make a good find and adorn your home with something that can remind you of your great trip to Ebeltoft. Ebeltoft Antik og Genbrug particularly specializes in ceramics, so you can find a nice mug to take home with you.
At Hedes Antik you can find collectibles and jewelry, and [Plus Patina] (https://www.facebook.com/Pluspatina) is packed with fun and exciting items.
Eat your fill and be happy
Ebeltoft is filled with good cafes and restaurants that have a cozy and historical atmosphere. You can get everything from a quick iced coffee in the sun to a delicious dinner with the whole family. The half-timbered houses are particularly noticeable when visiting Ebeltoft. Half-timbering is a building method that came to Denmark in the 16th century, and well-known buildings such as Ebeltoft Town Hall are half-timbered. In the heart of Ebeltoft lies Restaurant Mellem Jyder, which serves food in one of Ebeltoft's oldest properties. Here you can experience history and taste food with respect for good culinary craftsmanship. You'll find something for all ages on the menu.
Experience Grenaa
The old streets of Grenaa
When you explore the old streets of Grenaa, you can, among other things, experience The Old Town Hall from 1806. From there, you can walk down Lillegade, where there are plenty of shops and cafes where you can take a well-deserved break. Lillegade leads you down to The Old Mayor's Farm, which is a red and charming half-timbered house from 1768. If you like exploring old houses, the Mayor's Farm is definitely worth a visit.
Trip to Anholt
At Grenaa Harbor, you can take the ferry over to Anholt. Here you can experience a scenic island where there are almost no cars, and over half of the island is a nature reserve. Anholt is known for being an island rich in history, containing myths about Vikings and bloody battles between Denmark and England.
There is a very special tranquility about Anholt, which is absolutely worth exploring. It takes three hours to get there by ferry, and although it may sound like a terribly long time, there are plenty of opportunities to get a cup of coffee and enjoy the sea view. If you need something to listen to, you can read about our podcast recommendations that can keep you entertained.
On Anholt, it's not easy to get home, so we recommend a few days in a holiday home so you can make the most of your trip.
Lose yourself in East Jutland history
At Museum Østjylland in Grenaa, you can go exploring on summer days when the weather is more whimsical and you might need an escape. Currently, the museum has an exhibition about Kolindsund and how the first spade was put to the drainage 150 years ago. You can also experience the exhibition “Four Roads to Norddjurs”, which tells about the living conditions of the Stone Age.
The exhibition consists of film clips, pictures, stories, and things you can interact with. In addition to the museum's exhibitions, the building itself is worth a visit. It is the most beautiful, yellow half-timbered house that absolutely must be admired when in Grenaa.
