Guide to a cottage holiday in Tisvildeleje

Guide to a cottage holiday in Tisvildeleje

Tisvildeleje is shaped by its breathtaking nature, its special holiday atmosphere, and tranquil mornings spent foraging for chanterelles in Tisvilde Hegn. We've handpicked local gems and recommendations from our Landfolk hosts for your next cottage trip to this old holiday town.

Chanterelle hunting and hikes in Tisvilde Hegn

Recommended by Casper and Sophie.

Tisvilde Hegn is home to red deer. The forest is Denmark's fifth largest and was planted as a hedge in the fight against the sand drifts that plagued Tisvilde in the past. It is known and loved by locals for its rich wildlife and plant life, and its many cycling routes and trails. Casper often goes mountain biking in Tisvilde Hegn, as it offers some of the country's best trails for all levels. The Hegn is also ideal for hiking, chanterelle hunting, or berry picking.

Explore the Hegn's many excursion destinations

The Hegn hides a string of excursion destinations that you can explore both by bike and on foot. Make a stop at Troldeskoven (the Troll Forest), where gnarled pine trees form strange formations. Continue to the lost village of Torup, where you can see the excavations of the town that disappeared under a meter-thick layer of sand. Also, keep an eye out for the 59 Bronze Age burial mounds that tower in the landscape and offer a beautiful view of the coast.

Saturday flea market and delicious food in Tisvildeleje

Recommended by Birgitte.

Especially in the summer months, Tisvildeleje is brimming with holiday spirit and offers everything your heart desires: cozy shops, cafés, restaurants – and, of course, large ice creams. The flea market in Birkepladsen every Saturday is a must for Birgitte, and in the evening, she enjoys visiting one of the town's restaurants, which serve both family-friendly pizzas and gourmet meals. If you're looking for a fine dining experience, Birgitte recommends Tisvilde Kro. Here you can enjoy delicious food in cozy rooms with exposed beams and sloping wooden walls.

Buy greens from Rabarbergården

Recommended by Laura.

If you visit Rabarbergården, you'll likely come home with your arms full of preserves, organic wines, and beef grill sausages. The Køster family's sustainable farm is right in Laura's backyard, and she and her family enjoy visiting – either to take home freshly baked bread and cinnamon rolls for breakfast, or to enjoy a homemade meal in the restaurant, where the cream cheese is home-smoked and the radishes are picked from their own field. Year-round, you can also participate in activities for children and young people on the farm.

Hike along Denmark's most beautiful coastline

Recommended by Jens Thomas.

Tisvildeleje Beach is one of Denmark's most beautiful and stretches westward along Tisvilde Hegn. When the weather forecast is good, Jens Thomas likes to fill his water bottle and walk all the way along the waterline from Lejet to Asserbo, where he enjoys having a good lunch. The trip takes about two and a half hours and offers magnificent nature with dune landscapes and steep cliffs. On the beach, you can get a breath of fresh air, collect holed stones, and listen to the waves crashing against the waterline.

Enjoy the sea view at Helenekilde Badehotel

Recommended by Victor and Mille.

After a day of walks in Tisvilde Hegn, Victor and Mille enjoy ending the day with a drink on Helenekilde Badehotel's terrace with a view over the Kattegat, before heading home to watch the sunset from the beach stairs. The historic seaside hotel is worth a visit in itself – it was originally built as a summer house and has retained its personal touch. The seaside hotel is named after Saint Helene's spring, which was said to have healing powers and attracted people from near and far.

Balance walk through the reed forest

Put on your good hiking boots, grab your binoculars, and bring the whole family to Holløse Bredning. This large wetland with reed beds is covered with plank paths, where children and the young at heart will love to "walk the line," and it also houses a bird hide where you can observe the area's rich birdlife. In addition to the many diverse birds, you might also be lucky enough to spot beavers, which were released into the area by the Danish Nature Agency in 2009. You can park at Tibirke Church, which also offers a nice view over the broad and the fields.

Get fresh fish for lunch and quality meat for the grill

Recommended by Anne.

If you ask Anne, the food at home in the cottage is simply best when made with local ingredients. That's why she often stops by the local fishmonger Den Friske Fisk, which is a popular attraction in the area. Here you can fill your shopping basket with fresh or smoked fish, lumpfish roe, and freshly fried fish cakes. If the grill is to be lit in Anne's garden, Kødsnedkeren in Vejby is the preferred choice.

See the starry sky through a telescope

On the edge of the forest, on the outskirts of the Tisvilde cottage area, lies the small observatory Wieth-Knudsen Observatoriet. Twice a month, the observatory holds open house on Saturday evenings, regardless of the weather. Bring the children for an evening under the stars and in the spirit of astronomy – if the weather is with you, you might get a special astronomical observation through the telescope. Admission is free, and you don't need to sign up in advance.
