Best viewpoints along the North Zealand coast you didn't know existed
The North Zealand coast, also called the Danish Riviera, offers a wide range of fantastic viewpoints over white sandy beaches, beautiful natural areas, Kronborg Castle, and the Kattegat. We have handpicked a selection of the best viewpoints along the coastline for your next summer house holiday.
Experience the view from Knud Rasmussen's House
In Hundested lies Knud Rasmussen's House, built in 1917 as workspaces for the famous polar explorer. Today, the house is furnished as a museum and memorial room, and is considered by many to be Denmark's most beautifully situated museum. The house's 25,000 m² natural plot offers a unique view of the sea. In good weather, it is possible to see all the way to Hesselø, which is a small uninhabited island in the Kattegat.
The cozy and distinctive thatched house is also an experience in itself, and the magnificent landscape around the house is an ideal place for a stroll.
Enjoy lunch with a beautiful view in Tisvildeleje
In the charming summer house town of Tisvildeleje, lies the beautiful seaside hotel, Helenekilde, which not only offers exquisite gastronomic experiences in cozy and homely surroundings, but also a captivating view of the Kattegat.
The seaside hotel's elevated, wide terrace is a perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a good lunch while admiring the breathtaking sea. Afterwards, you can suitably take a short walk down the beach and see the iconic and atmospheric bathhouses.
Feel the rush from the observation tower in Arrenæs Næb
Not far from Melby and Asserbo Plantation lies Auderød, where it is possible to experience a rich birdlife and many pleasant forest paths. What many do not know, however, is that there is also an opportunity to enjoy a fantastic beautiful view. At the tip of the peninsula, Arrenæs Næb, there is a small observation tower from which you have a beautiful view over most of Arresø. A perfect place to rest on a hike or bike ride and enjoy your packed lunch.
See all the way to Sweden from Gilbjergstien
If you enjoy hiking in nature, there are many routes to enjoy in North Zealand. Along the coast from Gilleleje to Gilbjerghoved, the hiking trail, Gilbjergstien, is a particularly obvious destination. On the 2.6 km long trail, there are several resting places where you can stop when you want to enjoy the view over the water. Wind and weather determine how the beach looks. On the 33-meter high cliffs, you can look out over the Kattegat to the Kullen peninsula in Sweden. In winter, you might be lucky to experience large ice formations along the coast.
Picnic in Ruslands Bakker
Close to Dronningmølle lies the protected heathland, Ruslands Bakker. Ruslands Bakker is a 260-hectare hilly area covered with heather, juniper, and crooked oak trees. The area offers a wealth of beautiful views over the endless hills and primeval forest-like forest swamp. Bring your picnic basket and enjoy lunch with the most beautiful view.
A hidden gem in Tibirke Bakker
East of Tisvilde Hegn lies Tibirke Bakker, which consists of large wavy moraine slopes with grass, heather, and trees. The area is filled with beautiful viewpoints over the hilly terrain, the most famous of which is probably “Udsigten” (The View), which is the highest point of the hills. From here you can see Arresø, Roskilde Fjord, Gribskov, and Ellemosen.
A bit north of Udsigten you will find Tibirke Church and the church's Parish Council House, Gretely. If you walk down past Gretely and follow the path through a small piece of forest, you will come to a stone wall. If you follow the stone wall, you will reach the top of the hill, from where you have a wonderful view of both Arresø, Liseleje, and the ancient path Holløse Bredning.
Scottish Highlands in Heatherhill
North of Vejby Strand and south of Rågeleje Strand lies Heatherhill, which is a beautiful heather-clad landscape facing the coast. With its terrain, the area almost evokes associations with the Scottish Highlands.
If you are into hang gliding, paragliding, or just like to feel the wind in your hair, Heatherhill is an obvious place to visit. From the top of the steep cliffs, there is a magnificent view of the sea. If you turn your back to the sea, however, with the hilly heathland, you feel transported to the Himmerland Heaths in Northwest Jutland.
There are many beautiful viewpoints in the area around Heatherhill. A particularly impressive view, however, can be found two kilometers southeast of Heatherhill, where the burial mound, Gadehøj, is located.
