Culture on the coast: What to see and experience in North Zealand
North Zealand is home to a wealth of well-known attractions. But if you ask our Landfolk hosts, the North Coast hides even more hidden art gems, secret retreats, and very special cultural hiking routes that you shouldn't miss on your next cottage holiday.
Explore North Zealand's Christiania
Recommended by Line and Eskil.
On an old potato field, the eco-community Dyssekilde has blossomed. Here, 130 adults and 60 children between 0-100 years old live, who together have built a creative village community from scratch. If you are interested in sustainability and ecology, you must not miss a Saturday tour among the village's windmill, geothermal heating system, kitchen gardens, and willow purification plant. You can also walk around on your own among workshops and shops in the streets, which bear beautiful names like Solen (Sun), Månen (Moon), and Stjernerne (Stars).
Visit the Greenland Explorer's House
Recommended by Christina and Christian.
When Knud Rasmussen wasn't on long Greenland expeditions, he spent his time on the very outermost tip of Halsnæs. High on a hilltop surrounded by the most beautiful nature, you will find the polar explorer's thatched house, which today houses a small museum and a memorial room. Here Knud Rasmussen wrote his reports from Thule, and the typewriter still stands in the study. When you are done exploring the museum, you can take the short walk to Hundested and enjoy good food at the harbor – Christina and Christian recommend Spisehuset Knud, named after the explorer.
Enjoy the view from the lighthouse
Recommended by Jakob and Vibeke.
Nakkehoved Fyr has a history of 450 years and is still in operation today, casting its light over the Kattegat every night and guiding ships safely into port. If you climb the steep stairs, the lighthouse offers a fantastic view of the North Coast's nature, the Kattegat, and the Kullen peninsula in Sweden on the horizon. For 40 kroner, you can also visit the small lighthouse history museum, complete with foghorn, lighthouse lamps, and old sea charts. After visiting the lighthouse, Jakob and Vibeke often follow the lighthouse path back to Gilleleje and settle down at the charming fishing harbor – unless they've stopped at Fyrkroen beforehand.
See art in the park
Behind tall trees on the road between Gilleleje and Dronningmølle, Munkeruphus peeks out. The dusty green listed wooden villa was once home to the multi-artist Gunnar Aagaard and his wife, but today it has been transformed into an exhibition space that unites architecture, design, and art. Here you can explore contemporary art in the atmospheric rooms, stroll through the art park where sculptures rise among exotic trees, and enjoy a light meal in the café with a view over the Øresund. Supplement the trip with a dip in the water at the end of the art park.
Find sculptures in Russia's hills
Recommended by Carina.
Carina and her family enjoy visiting Tegners Museum and Sculpture Park in the heathland of Russia. The bunker-like building sits as if dropped from the sky among grazing sheep and purple heather. Here you can explore 250 of the visual artist's distinctive works: large and bombastic plaster and clay figures of mythical characters and muscular bodies. The art experience continues in Russia's hills, where 14 of Tegner's bronze sculptures are scattered. Carina and her family also recommend stopping by Traktørstedet Sørens Café for a cup of coffee and an ice cream.
Cultural hike with Kierkegaard
Recommended by Søren and Henriette.
The famous Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard once wrote that no thought is so heavy that one cannot walk away from it. Follow in the philosopher's footsteps with Kierkegaard by Nature, a curated hiking route that allows you to ponder life's big questions as you follow the route that Kierkegaard fell in love with long ago. The 12 kilometers take you from Nakkehoved Fyr to Gilbjerg Hoved, which Søren and Henriette particularly enjoy visiting. Here, a memorial stone has been erected for the philosopher, and here you can enjoy the most beautiful view over the Kattegat.
Go back to the Middle Ages in the monastery
Move a little further inland and visit Esrum Kloster, which is filled with atmosphere and history. Tap into the medieval atmosphere in the 850-year-old Cistercian monastery, where you can visit the monastery courtyard and garden, learn about the monks' lives, and children can play their way back to the time of the Knights Templar on the nature playground. Perhaps you'll also be lucky enough to catch one of the many special events and cultural experiences held at the monastery. Don't miss Møllegården's shop, which offers all sorts of monastery products such as beer, mead, schnapps, and honey.
World-class contemporary art
Recommended by Anne and Peter.
The Louisiana museum is something truly special. Here, art and nature merge in the museum's large windows overlooking the Øresund and the lush sculpture park that slopes down towards the water. Anne and Peter enjoy visiting Louisiana's impressive collection of international and Danish modern art. If you have children with you on your museum visit, you can try your hand at the artists' materials and techniques in the Children's House.
Renaissance castle, maritime museum, and street food in Helsingør
Recommended by Charlotte and Ulrik.
Hop on your bikes and follow the coast to Helsingør, where you can easily spend a whole day. Walk through the crooked, cobblestone streets with small houses and cozy cafés, and stop at Kronborg, where Holger Danske awaits you. Then visit the internationally renowned Museum of Maritime History, which entices with captivating stories about life at sea. Here are nautical miles and sailors, mermaids and nymphs, smuggling and treasures, and something for children and adults of all ages. If you get hungry along the way, Værftets Madmarked offers street food in the old shipyard halls.
Winter swimming in the Kattegat, a forest trip in Tisvilde Hegn, and hiking along the North Coast Path. Let yourself be inspired for your next cottage trip with our many cottages near Gilleleje, Tisvildeleje, and Vejby Strand.
