Autumn Holiday in Djursland: 6 Events in the Autumn Countryside You Can't Miss
Apple festival, beer tasting, sand casting, and amber hunting at dusk. We've gathered six activities you shouldn't miss when summer ends and autumn sets in with its golden colours and crisp air. Gather the whole family for creative pursuits around Denmark's 'nose' or embark on an adventure in Djursland's autumn landscape.
Go to the apple festival in Ebeltoft
Besides its cobblestone streets and fine cultural gems, Ebeltoft is perhaps best known for its annual Ebelfestival, which takes place in October. The festival offers music and entertainment in the streets, and you can buy all sorts of good things and delicacies to take home from the tents and stalls at Bryggertorvet – everything from ceramics and herbal products to apple fritters and coffee.
Link arms and head to the painting workshop and candle-making workshop in Fedt Mikkels Gang, or settle down for non-alcoholic apple mulled wine in the café. In the apple pressing tents, you can buy both apple juice and apple trees, and every day during the holiday there are new activities for all ages on the program.
Create your own little glass masterpiece at the Glass Museum
Be introduced to the universe of glass art when the Glass Museum at Ebeltoft Harbour invites children and their adults to experiment with fusing, sand casting, and sandblasting during the autumn holiday. On Mondays and Wednesdays, for example, you can create your own small artworks in coloured glass, which can be picked up two days later when they are finished melting.
Tuesday features sand casting, while on Thursday and Friday you can decorate your own lantern or drinking glass, which will then be sandblasted at the museum. Admission for children under 18 is free throughout the holiday, and you can read much more about the program on the museum's website.
Powdered wigs and baroque idyll at Gammel Estrup
Step back in time at one of Denmark's best-preserved Renaissance estates, Gammel Estrup. Here you can explore the opulent wealth of the nobility in the grand knight's halls and luxurious chambers. Pack a lunch or fill a thermos with coffee and settle down in the baroque garden, orangery, or apple orchard, while the kids play in the nature playground.
If you haven't had enough apples yet, the autumn holiday also celebrates the apple in the Orangeries in the Manor Garden, where you can help press your own organic apple juice in the apple press. In the Manor Kitchen, there's a flurry of activity pickling and preserving seasonal vegetables for the long winter, and of course, you can also buy a slice of apple cake for your sweet tooth.
Hunt for the beach's gold
Set out into the evening darkness in search of the Danish coast's golden treasures, when biologist and amber enthusiast Karen Risager invites you on an amber safari at Fuglsø Strand. Here you'll see the beach from a whole new side as you go amber hunting together at dusk, equipped with amber lamps whose UV light makes the amber glow among the dark stones.
On the tour, Karen shares the history of the millions of years old resin lumps and gives good tips on how you can find them on your own. If you're lucky, you'll get to feel the magic and thrill when you hold the beautiful stone in your hands – but if you don't hit the jackpot, you can comfort yourself with a cup of hot cocoa or coffee. Put on good shoes and warm outerwear, and buy your tickets here.
Go to a kite workshop and launch your own creations into the air
Windy autumn days invite kite flying, and on Monday of the autumn holiday, Kyst- og Fjordcentret invites children and the young at heart to make and decorate their own beautiful kites at Grenaa Nature School. Here you can create your own sled kite with beautiful patterns and, with a bit of luck, even launch it into the air.
If Monday's kite workshop doesn't fit into your holiday plans, you can easily follow this guide and create your own little kite workshop at home on the dining table in the holiday home.
Get a real brewery atmosphere and taste samples at the farm brewery
Autumn is a very special time to explore Djursland's unique ice age landscape. For example, take a trip to Jernhatten's 50-meter-high coastal cliff, where the gnarled trees of the troll forest are dressed in autumn colours, and you can enjoy the view over the Kattegat and the island of Hjelm. The fit can follow the narrow stairs down to the beach and get a good blow on the walk back along the surf.
If you need to warm up after your walk, you can head to Ebeltoft Gårdbryggeri. Every day during the holiday, the brewery invites you in for a real brewery atmosphere with beer from the taps and freshly squeezed lemonade for the youngest. Explore the brewery's production and fermentation tanks in the mild scent of malt and hops, and if you're lucky, be one of the first to taste the winter's darker beers.
Go hiking in the beautiful hills of Mols Bjerge, discover cultural gems in idyllic Ebeltoft, and find fresh fish and vegetables at the area's lovely farm shops and eateries. Let yourself be inspired for your next holiday home trip with our handpicked holiday homes in Nationalpark Mols Bjerge.
