Scenic cycling routes in North Zealand
We have gathered a bunch of cycling routes for you who wish to experience the North Zealand nature and what it has to offer. This is whether you prefer shorter routes, long ones with overnight stays, or want to go mountain biking.
From Hillerød to Gilleleje
On cycle route 33, you can go from beautiful Hillerød to peaceful Gilleleje. You can start the day by seeing Frederiksborg Castle on a fresh morning, before tourists have woken up to see the attraction, so you get it all to yourself. Take a walk in the beautiful, surrounding parks and gather energy for the day's bike ride. Furthermore, the cycle route starts with you cycling through the castle gate.
You can fill up on coffee from home and buy delicious pastries for the trip in Hillerød. Along the route, you will pass Gantekrogsø. Here are tables and benches where you can relax and perhaps enjoy some of the pastries you brought from Hillerød. Take a sip of coffee and enjoy nature. If you left later in the day, you can grill in the area and have a delicious lunch before cycling off again.
When you arrive in Gilleleje, we highly recommend a trip down to the harbor. Gilleleje is a fishing town, so you are sure to get good produce. At Fiskehuset Gilleleje you get freshly caught fish every day, which is ideal for the much-needed lunch or dinner that awaits after a long bike ride.
Take a longer trip along cozy coastal towns
Route 47, also known as the North Coast Cycle Path, is a bike ride where you get to experience Helsingør, Gilleleje, Tisvildeleje, and Hundested on a 65-kilometer stretch. You can start in Helsingør, where you can go sightseeing before the trip continues. Helsingør is known for its idyll and history. Especially Kronborg Castle is worth a visit. Afterwards, it's just a matter of getting on your bike and continuing on the beautiful route.
When you need a break on the trip, we recommend a stop at Hornbæk. You can let your body rest in an idyllic cottage close to nature. Then you also have the opportunity to make some delicious food in the evening, enjoy a glass of wine, and get a good night's sleep before the trip continues.
Along your trip on the North Coast Cycle Path, you will have ample opportunity for scenic pit stops and supermarkets where you can stock up on water and snacks to keep yourself going. Should your bike need air, that can also be arranged. If you fancy another overnight stay, Tisvildeleje is an ideal place to stay before you reach Hundested. We have gathered a number of cottages for true connoisseurs, where you can find shelter for the night.
Take a trip out into Tisvilde Hegn and see the very special nature with twisted trees and forest floor with moss. When you eventually reach Hundested, we think it calls for a true celebration. You can celebrate by going to Restaurant Knud and experiencing the good bistro cuisine. Perhaps grab a drink while you're there.
Experience the par force hunting landscape in North Zealand
In three idyllic forests in North Zealand, you will find the par force hunting landscape, which has beautiful cycling routes accessible to everyone. The area was laid out for the Danish kings' par force hunting and is today on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
On the Parforce Cycle Route 105 in Gribskov, you can experience a trip that starts at Frederiksborg Castle. On the trip, you will see the beautiful nature, which you can always take time to explore further if you just hop off your bike when you need a rest. On the trip, you can also see Jægersborg Dyrehave, Mølleåen, and Ulvedalene. There are many good roads to cycle on with marked routes.
In Store Dyrehave, you can go on an adventure on Parforce Cycle Route 110. Should you feel like mountain biking, there are bike trails made specifically for that. You might be lucky and spot a roe deer, fallow deer, a small badger, or foxes. There are also bogs and lakes in the area, colorful butterflies, and songbirds. Make sure to have water in a large water bottle and snacks for the trip, as you must not underestimate how much you might need to quench your thirst and hunger. You can make something extra out of it and bake the evening before or make some delicious sandwiches that you can enjoy in the beautiful nature.
