Guide to a cottage holiday in Fårevejle
Let yourselves be enveloped by nature and tranquility in Fårevejle, characterized by its unique moraine landscapes, breathtaking views of the fjord and bay, and cozy farm shops and eateries. We have gathered local gems and recommendations from our wonderful Landfolk hosts for your next cottage trip.
Be captivated by the view from Odsherred's Ice Age hills
Recommended by Helle and Søren.
At the top of the Bronze Age mound Vejrhøj, Odsherred's highest point, a very special 360-degree view of Lammefjorden and Sejerø Bay awaits you. If you climb “Bjergene” (the Mountains), you can truly sense how colossal Ice Age forces have shaped the landscape. Here you can gaze out over the grassy hills, islands rising above the sea, and thatched houses in a brown, yellow, and green mosaic of fields.
Helle and Søren enjoy following the marked hiking trails through the hilly pastures and are particularly fond of the trip around the spit of land Ordrup Næs, where you can greet grazing sheep, see the view over the nearby islands Nekselø and Sejerø, or spot seals and porpoises from the tip of the spit.
Visit a genuine Danish winery
Recommended by Ulrik and Astrid.
At Vejrhøj Vingård, you get the feeling of having landed somewhere far away from Denmark. Here, Nina and Niels defy the Danish climate and press grapes grown on their own fields. Swing by the charming farm with a view of the sea in Sejerø Bay, where you can stroll among the grapevines or buy a locally produced bottle of cold white wine or rosé for dinner or to enjoy in the afternoon sun. Also, go for a wine tasting, where the wine's sweet and sour nuances tell the story of the nature it was created in.
Pick Lammefjord carrots at the Visitor Field
Odsherred is known for growing potatoes, carrots, and other good produce on the former seabed. If you are lucky enough to visit Fårevejle in the summer, you can see for yourselves at the Open Visitor Field, located on the reclaimed Lammefjord. Bring the whole family and spend a day picking Lammefjord carrots and striped candy beets. You can, of course, take your harvest home for a delicious meal in your cottage. It costs 50 kroner for adults and 15 for children, and the field is open for visits every Wednesday and Thursday from late June to early August.
Enjoy a Michelin dinner cooked over a bonfire
Recommended by Ane Kirstine.
Lille B is the little sister of the renowned Michelin restaurant Formel B, which some may know from Copenhagen. In beautiful surroundings at Høve Strand on the shores of Sejerø Bay, Lille B and its associated beach bar serve good coffee, beer, wine, and food cooked over a bonfire. Eat greens from local farms and fresh fish from Odsherred's fjords in the glow of the bonfire flames. There are Michelin chefs in the kitchen, but the style is cozy and informal, and the food is served family-style.
Swim along Sejerø Bay's beautiful beaches
Recommended by Tine.
With the long white sandy beaches along Sejerø Bay, you are never far from the next swim in the sea. Tine and her family have particularly fallen in love with Veddinge Strand, but also recommend following the coast further north to Gudmindrup Strand. The beach was previously named Denmark's best and entices with its chalk-white sand, low dunes, and the ice cream and food stall Haveje, where you can get perhaps Odsherred's best burger and enjoy the sunset over the water.
Stop by the haunted Dragsholm Castle
Recommended by Rikke and Lars.
At Dragsholm Castle, the history of its time as a bishop's castle and royal castle is embedded in its walls. And perhaps you can also hear whispers in the corners from the ghosts said to reside in the castle. The castle, located in the middle of a vegetable field, offers gourmet meals in the castle rooms, and you can also stop by the farm shop in the old manor stable. Once, the stable housed the manor's horses and carriages, but today you can fill your baskets with delicacies or eat an ice cream in the sun with a view of the moat.
Mix-your-own greens and fresh fish on the menu
Recommended by Sara and Nikolai.
When Sara and Nikolai spend time together in their cottage Hindbærhytten, they prefer to shop locally. And one of their local favorites is Lammefjordens Spisekammer, where you can find everything from vegetables grown in the Lammefjord's muddy soil to locally produced preserves and juices. If fresh fish is on the menu, Sara and Nikolai stop by the local fish truck Landkrabbens Fisk, which has its counter filled with fresh fish, freshly fried fish cakes, and their own smoked goods.
Free play in Eventyrdalen
Recommended by Tine.
Kårup Skov is a popular excursion destination for our local Landfolk hosts. Tine and her family often visit Eventyrdalen, where densely grown ferns, coniferous forests, and beech trees create a magical little hollow, and the kids can let loose on the nature playground's slides, balance beams, and wooden saga figures.
Eat organic ice cream in Ordrup
Recommended by Rikke and Lars.
When you are in the area anyway, you must not miss Ordrup's popular ice cream parlor Isøre. Particularly popular is the homemade organic ice cream in flavors such as sea buckthorn/carrot or rhubarb/white chocolate, and affogato for adults (a scoop of vanilla ice cream with two shots of espresso coffee). The village of Ordrup guarantees a genuine West Zealand atmosphere and also houses a grocer and several eateries.
See art in Veddinge Bakker
Recommended by Ane Kirstine.
Ane Kirstine particularly enjoys cycling through Veddinge Bakker's challenging hills and beautiful nature, but the area also invites good walks. For example, follow the seven-kilometer long ridge trail Højderygstien, which leads you through the Ice Age landscape from Veddinge Bakker to Duttehøje. Stop at the Bronze Age mounds and the jumble of crazy, crooked, and angry clay masks in Veddinge Bakker – an art project created by schoolchildren from all over Odsherred.
At Landfolk, we provide our best tips and recommendations for local gems and popular attractions to visit during your cottage holiday. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook for even more inspiration for your cottage trip.
