The undiscovered peninsula, Egebjerg

Odsherred is one of the most popular holiday home areas on Zealand – and for good reason. Especially the northwestern part near Asnæs, Vig, and Ellinge Lyng towards Sejerø Bay, as well as the northeastern part near Rørvig and Nykøbing Sjælland, are excellent areas to spend a holiday home vacation. Rarely mentioned, however, is the Egebjerg peninsula south of Nykøbing Sjælland when discussing beautiful holiday home areas in Odsherred. And that's a shame, because the somewhat unknown peninsula actually has a lot to offer.

The Egebjerg peninsula is surrounded by beautiful bays and fjords. To the north lies the shallow bay, Nykøbing Bugt, with moraine hills and forests along its banks, and to the south lies the reclaimed and historic fjord, Lammefjorden. Both are part of Isefjord, which is Zealand's largest fjord system. In other words, there are plenty of opportunities to experience the fresh sea breeze in your hair and sand under your toes when staying in a holiday home on the Egebjerg peninsula.

The Egebjerg peninsula is also known for its rolling ice age landscapes and for the forests, Kongsøre Skov and Ulkerup Skov. In the northern part of the Egebjerg peninsula lies Ulkerup Skov, where you can experience the exciting, and somewhat eerie, ceramic sculptures; Ulkerup Souls. The sculptures visualize the story of the mysterious forest folk who allegedly lived in the forest. The nine souls will certainly pique the interest of children.

In the southeastern part of the Egebjerg peninsula, bordering the Isefjord, lies Kongsøre Skov. The forest is in many ways the epitome of a true Danish beech forest with its many beautiful, old beech trees. The forest is also full of ancient monuments such as burial mounds and dolmens. A walk in Kongsøre Skov is ideal for clearing your head and giving your body peace from city life and feeling the fresh forest air. Bring your packed lunch and enjoy lunch by the new forest lake and finish with dessert at Isværkstedet, which is within walking distance of the forest.

Experience the folk high school town, Vallekilde

In the southernmost part of Odsherred lies the small cozy village, Vallekilde. Vallekilde is not one of the most well-known holiday home towns in Odsherred, but in fact, there is much to experience both in and around the town. In Vallekilde, among other things, is one of Denmark's oldest folk high schools, Vallekilde Højskole. The folk high school is situated in beautiful surroundings and has a fantastic beautiful garden that you are welcome to visit. In the garden, there are large old trees with swings where you can take a swing while enjoying the folk high school's beautiful architecture.

When you are in Vallekilde, you should also visit Den Trierske Gravplads, which is located in a field close to Vallekilde Højskole. Here, the founder of the folk high school, Ernst Trier, and his wife, Marie Trier, are buried. There is a nice and cozy little path down to the grave from the folk high school. However, the path can be a bit difficult to find if you are not familiar with the area. If you can't find it, you can always ask one of the locals, who will gladly show you the way.

Vallekilde is not yet on the list of the most well-known holiday home towns in Odsherred, which makes the town the perfect place to settle down if you need a quiet break from the city's tourists during the summer months. Head to Christina and Sebastian's little yellow holiday home in Havnsø, only about 7 km from Vallekilde. Havnsø is particularly known for its cozy and lively harbor, where you can buy fresh fish for dinner, eat delicious soft pancakes at Pandekagehuset or take the ferry to one of the nearby islands.

Explore the many ancient monuments in Grevinge Skov

In addition to boasting beautiful and child-friendly sandy beaches, Odsherred is also known for its captivating and beautiful coastal forests. You may have heard of Høve Skov, Sonnerup Skov, Annebjerg Skov, and Kårup Skov, but Grevinge Skov in the southeastern part of Odsherred is also worth a visit. Unlike Odsherred's coastal forests, Grevinge Skov is located a bit more inland. However, that doesn't make it any less interesting. Grevinge Skov is an incredibly beautiful deciduous forest, packed with exciting ancient monuments from the Stone Age and Bronze Age.

What many don't know is that Grevinge Skov is also one of the best mushroom forests in Odsherred. Especially during the summer months, if there has been some rain, the forest teems with chanterelles, boletes, trumpet mushrooms, and much more.
