Farm shops in North Zealand: Visiting farm shops in cottage country
Freshly spun honey, sweet strawberries, and vegetables fresh from the field. Explore North Zealand's many wonderful farm shops, brimming with local specialties and delicious ingredients for your next meal in the cottage.
Like an undergrowth in cottage country, small local producers and farm shops lie waiting for you – if you know where to look. We've asked our local Landfolk hosts for advice and received their best recommendations for wonderful farm shops in North Zealand.
Here, you can not only fill your basket with seasonal fruits and vegetables and locally produced specialties. You can also shop sustainably and get a taste of the area that frames your cottage holiday. Don't miss the many activities taking place around the farms: everything from beer tasting for adults to berry picking and farm visits for the whole family.
Explore local specialties at Rabarbergaarden
Recommended by Laura.
A favorite among our local Landfolk is Rabarbergaarden, which combines organic farming, a farm shop, and a restaurant. At Rabarbergaarden, Laura and her family often stop by to pick up freshly baked bread and cakes or explore all sorts of delicacies from the North Coast's local producers. Fill your basket with homemade preserves and fennel sausages, or find the chanterelle knife you didn't know you needed for your next mushroom hunt in the forest. You can also live out your garden dreams in the plant nursery or participate in activities for children and young people on the farm.
Buy organic greens from Ørby Gartneri
Ørby Gartneri og Gårdbutik is worth a visit for its brilliant yellow sunflower fields alone. 50 years ago, the nursery began selling vegetables from a small roadside stall, and today the enterprise has grown into a wonderful farm shop offering greens and fruits, wine, ice cream, and flowers. The small self-service shop is open from the beginning of May and accepts MobilePay, while the big summer sale starts during the Ascension Day holiday. Come home with everything from new Danish potatoes, crisp peas, and asparagus to fresh herbs.
Find fresh vegetables and herbs at the stable door
North Zealand is a treasure trove of fresh fruits and vegetables, and just a stone's throw from Ørby Gartneri you'll find Grønt fra Kolsbæk. In the stable door sale, you can stock up on more than 60 different kinds of fresh vegetables – the sale opens at the end of March and stays open until late summer. Cook with Kolsbæk's greens on your own in the cottage, or visit the charming restaurant Tinggården, where star chefs conjure with Kolsbæk's vegetables.
Take natural wine home to the terrace
Recommended by Tina Sofia and Christian
Near the village of Anisse lies Garbolund, a genuine Danish winery with about 8000 grapevines. The farm's old stable now houses a winery where pure, natural wines are produced without additives or filtration. Tina Sofie and Christian often stop by Garbolund, which offers a light lunch and invites both hikers and wine enthusiasts to visit. Enjoy the view among the grapevines over Arresø, and take a delicious, locally brewed natural wine home to the terrace.
Pick your own strawberries in the fields
Recommended by Trine.
Grab bowls and containers and spend a summer day together in the fields picking sweet Danish strawberries. Trine and her family often visit Gundekildegaard, located right between Vejby and Rågeleje. During peak season, self-picking is open – for both strawberries and wild flowers – and you can also enjoy a refreshment at the Strawberry Café, which serves, among other things, the farm's famous ice cream made in its own jam factory.
Get morning bread at the country store
Recommended by Monique and Martin.
Between Helsinge and Frederiksværk, you'll find the charming red farm Tinggården. The farm guarantees freshly baked morning bread, and Monique and Morten often bring home fresh croissants, cinnamon buns, or other delicacies from the country store's shelves. At the farm, you can also eat sourdough pizzas under the walnut tree in the garden, and in the restaurant's rooms, you can enjoy a true gourmet experience with freshly caught fish from Roskilde Fjord and greens from Kolsbæk.
Buy Italian wines by the roadside
Recommended by Frode and Christian.
Frode and Christian gladly fill their baskets with local produce from farm shops and markets, and when homemade meals in the cottage need to be supplemented with a good bottle of wine, the Piemontevognen is the preferred choice. The sales wagon, located in Asserbo, is brimming with Italian wines and truffles, air-dried ham, and cheese. Keep an eye on where the wagon is currently parked here.
Say hello to the farm animals at Tothaven
Recommended by Sara and Mikkel.
Sara and Mikkel and their two children love visiting the idyllic Tothaven just outside Kikhavn. Tothaven is home to lots of different animals, and for 50 kroner, you can say hello to the pigs, cuddle cats and rabbits, and ride ponies. Come during the summer months when there are lots of cute piglets, and also stop by the farm's dairy where you can buy delicious goat cheese. If you live closer to Gilleleje, Tisvildeleje, or Rågeleje, you can also visit Kollerødgård or Bedstemor Ann’s Besøgsgård.
Stop by farm shop Kikforbi
If you're in the area anyway, the old fishing village of Kikhavn is worth a visit with its charming half-timbered houses and hollyhocks. Also stop by the farm shop Kikforbi, which also has a café in the summer. Here, the shelves are full of meat and cold cuts from their own animals, delicacies, specialty goods, and handicrafts, and much more.
Go for a beer tasting among the sheep
Tolykkegård is, among other things, a micro-farm brewery that produces beer from soil to glass. Henrik Koch and Marianne Johnson run the enterprise Det Våde Får, and Henrik malts and roasts the grain for his beers himself. Explore different varieties brewed with, for example, barley malt and organic hops from their own fields, elderflower from their own hedge, and apples picked in their own plantation. The farm also holds beer tastings and beer brewing courses where you can become experts in the art of brewing your own beer.
Enhance cottage coziness with local specialties
Recommended by Maria and Sebastian.
With views of the hills and the farm's own small plantation, Butik Bakkegården invites you into a true paradise for specialty lovers. Here you'll find everything from sparkling spumante and gin for summer evenings on the terrace to good English biscuits and tea for autumn days in front of the fireplace. Explore the farm's selection of sustainable skincare, handmade jewelry and cushions, locally produced delicacies, and everything else a North Coast cottage might need.
The farm shops in North Zealand are abundant, but so is the nature right outside the cottage door. Read our theme about tasting nature, and go foraging, mushroom hunting, or rosehip picking along the North Coast.
