Three architectural cultural institutions worth visiting

Three architectural cultural institutions worth visiting

A trip to a summer house can bring peace, togetherness, and quality time, but for many, excursions to the country’s wonderful cultural institutions are also part of the summer house experience. We’ve put together a list of three distinctive places across Denmark that offer culture, architecture, and activities.

The selected locations are near a Landfolk vacation home, so you can combine your vacation with an experience beyond the ordinary.

Tirpitz

Tirpitz

Shipwrecks, dangerous smugglers, and forbidden love

Blåvand / Website

The Danish west coast is home to a wealth of gripping stories—and they lie just beneath the surface. The Tirpitz cannot be seen with the naked eye, but beneath the sand lies a beautiful museum. Here, all the stories are narrated by actors, so there is no text to read. The storytelling is accessible to everyone, and even children as young as preschool age can follow along.

Behind this architectural masterpiece is the Bjarke Ingels Group, and the museum’s design stems from the concept of an invisible museum. The museum complex stands as an antithesis to the Tirpitz bunker’s heavy and closed-off form, and together they create a truly unique museum that both reaches out to the corners of the world and remains centered on itself.

Grimmerhus Gets a Makeover

Middelfart / Website

The vibrant contemporary museum CLAY Keramikmuseum Danmark consists not of just one, but two buildings with very different architectural styles and traditions. You’re greeted by the old mansion, Grimmerhus, when you arrive at the museum from the land side, but from the water side, it’s a completely different sight. Here, you’re greeted by the large, modern glass facade and the reddish-brown and rust-red bricks that create a connection between the new and old sections of the museum.

CLAY is the Nordic region’s largest specialized museum for ceramic art, crafts, and design, and throughout the museum, you’ll get a sense of an art form that is constantly evolving.

Dodekalitten

Dodekalitten

Sculpture and Music in a Historic Landscape

Lolland / Website

In a field on Lolland, overlooking the Småland Strait, a monument is taking shape. Here, sculpture and music converge, and together they immortalize this unique experience in a beautiful, historic landscape. The vision for the site is to combine nature, sculpture, music, and history into a single, unified experience.

Ephemeral music and stone, which represents eternity, form the foundation of Dodekalitten. Thomas Kadziola is the sculptor behind the stone sculptures. The acclaimed visual artist has held several exhibitions, but he is best known for his stone heads, which can be found throughout the country. Now they stand on Lolland as well. The ephemeral music was composed by Wayne Siegel—his approach to creating music in and for the present moment is central to his work, and this is evident here as well.
