Johanne Landbo Guides a Summer Cottage Tour Near Asnæs ~ Pottery, Sourdough Pizza, and Artists' Homes

My experiences with summer house life in Denmark have been a part of my life since childhood—I spent many summers as a child in summer houses in various places around Denmark. We’ve never owned one, but in my experience, it’s great to rent a summer house in different places, explore the area where you’re staying, and take advantage of the surrounding and local attractions.

So what else should you check out near Martine and Kalle’s summer house? Here’s a quick mini-guide, because Kalle and Martine’s summer house was beautifully located in Asnæs, close to Høve Beach. There are great drives to plenty of fun experiences!

You should go check out:

Lillero Camping. Here, you can enjoy a homemade sourdough pizza or a good cup of coffee. Take a dip in the ocean right next door and soak up the atmosphere of the campground.

Keramik og Kaos. Or Niels Huang, as he’s also known. He creates the absolute finest ceramics and works out of his studio in Lumsås. He’s been making ceramics for nearly 30 years, so be sure to stop by and chat with him about his technique—it’s reportedly a dying art form within the world of ceramics. I ended up bringing one of his vases home, which says a lot about how impressed I am by his ceramic art.

Vig Flea Market. On Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., there’s a flea market with local vendors. You’ll find both collectors and people clearing out their attics. You can also enjoy a good cup of coffee or a slice of homemade cake, and there’s even a wooden playground for kids right behind the market.

Anneberg. Enjoy brunch at Anneberg near Nykøbing Sjælland. Here, you can sit outside in nice weather with a fantastic view of the water and meadows. Their strawberry tart comes highly recommended—if I may pass along a tip from someone… You can also visit the Hempel Glass Museum right behind the restaurant!

Malergården. One of the few well-preserved artists’ homes from 1934, which is now a museum. Here you can see the studio, the beautiful old living rooms, and even create and draw your own artwork using their materials.
