Stone house in a quiet lane on the Île de Ré

This house sits at the end of a flower-lined lane, close to the village centre and its market, yet without any overlooking neighbours. The hosts renovated it entirely by hand, and you can feel that care throughout. Every detail was considered to make a compact space feel generous and open — a house, as they put it, that breathes.

Stone floors, solid wood parquet, handcrafted tiles, and ceramic basins made by a ceramicist set the tone inside. Vintage Danish furniture, sourced piece by piece, sits alongside bespoke built-ins in neutral, natural tones. A full-width accordion door folds away so you can move freely between inside and out whenever the temperature invites it.

The lane itself is quiet and flower-lined, giving the house a sense of privacy that is rare this close to a village centre. When the accordion door is open, the boundary between the interior and the immediate outside simply disappears, and you have the space to yourselves.

The house is in the north of the Île de Ré, close to some of the island's finest beaches, including Trousse-Chemise. A cycle path runs through the Lilleau des Niges nature reserve, crossing salt marshes and habitats for numerous bird species — unique in Europe. The Phare des Baleines lighthouse is also nearby, along with the village market.
