Waldhaus on Adelsö – Nature, Vikings, and Two Wonderful Hosts The vacation home is located in the woods, just a short walk from the lake—the pine forest begins right behind the house. The furnishings are modern and of consistently high quality, and the large, open windows truly bring nature into the house. In the morning, you wake up to a view of the greenery; in the evening, you sit there and simply gaze out. Melissa and Gustaf are wonderful hosts: very friendly, always ready to help with any questions, and pleasantly unobtrusive. You feel well taken care of without ever feeling watched. Adelsö and the neighboring island of Birka are full of relics from the Viking Age. Following these traces was both fascinating and educational for us—it gives you a whole new perspective on this place. Then there are the Hovgård and Sättra gård nature reserves, which are perfect for long hikes. We went hiking, baked bread, picked blueberries and mushrooms, and sampled “Blåbärssoppa” and “Ostkaka.” A week that couldn’t have been more Swedish. Our tips for future guests: be sure to stop by the little ICA store by the ferry on Adelsö and book the ferry ride as well as the guided tour of Birka Island with “Kalle” in Lindby.
