Quiet in house by the South Funen Archipelago

Hi, we’re Rikke and Morten, and we’re from Odense. In 2021, we fell in love with South Langeland and bought our lovely vacation home. The house was originally a Lilje cottage built in 1974, but in 1997 a second story was added, where our master bedroom is located with a beautiful view of the sea and the protected meadow.

Since we took over the cottage in the fall of 2021, we’ve been renovating and remodeling. We’re really into DIY and upcycling, and that helps give the cottage its own personality and cozy style. At the same time, it’s been important to us to make the house functional and comfortable to live in.

It’s the perfect spot for a romantic getaway, a cozy family vacation, or some relaxation with walks, good books, and plenty of fresh air. The silence is sometimes broken by chattering geese flying in large formations, as one of Denmark’s major bird sanctuaries, Tryggelev Nor, is nearby. It is home and a resting place for many rare bird species and a nature reserve under the Danish Bird Protection Foundation.

If you drive south to the charming fishing village of Bagenkop, you’ll pass Klise Nor, where Langeland’s wild horses graze. All the way south at Dovns Klint, you’ll find the raw, unspoiled nature with the sea and the hat-shaped hills that are so characteristic of Langeland. Southern Langeland is also part of UNESCO’s South Funen Archipelago Geopark.

We enjoy walking down to the beach to watch the most beautiful sunsets. The beach is 100 meters from the house on the other side of the meadow and is protected by stone breakwaters. During the swimming season from May to September, a swimming pier is set up, and the clear, deep water invites you to take refreshing morning dips and cooling swims on hot summer days.

We also enjoy visiting the many thrift stores and flea markets in the area—including Kræmmeren in Kædeby, where you can find some great treasures. We still have many plans for the summer house and are in the process of planning a new large terrace, a wilderness bath, an outdoor shower, and a sauna.
