Grass-roofed forest cabin in Tokkekøb Hegn

Perched on a natural moraine hill in Tokkekøb Hegn in North Zealand stands this forest house with a grass roof and open-ceilinged rooms throughout. The wood in the walls, ceilings, and floors provides excellent acoustics and a comfortable indoor climate, and the house is insulated year-round with rock wool insulation.

All woodwork is painted white or pigmented white. From the living room windows facing north, you look out at eye level at the roots of large beech trees in the old forest ridge, while to the south you enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the landscape. The wood-burning stove in the living room offers a great view of the flames and adds to the cabin atmosphere.

From the kitchen window, the view extends through the forest down to open fields with grazing cows. The kitchen door leads out to a tiled patio beneath the beech canopy, where you can listen to birdsong at dusk. The large wooden deck facing west is warm and sunny in the afternoon, and to the south, the narrower deck gives the feeling of standing on the deck of a ship.

The swimming lake Lergraven is about a 4-minute walk from the house. In the forest, you’ll find the well-preserved Kongedysse burial mound from around 3,400 Kr., picnic areas, shelters, and fishing spots. Allerød Station, with S-train service to Copenhagen Central Station in about 30 minutes, is 3.5 km from the house.
