Medieval stone house in the Garfagnana hills

The house is situated in a very authentic and beautiful setting in a cozy little Italian village; you have the most beautiful natural surroundings right outside your door, and you’re close to the locals, which was very charming. The apartment is very tastefully decorated—rustic and simple. A major drawback is the indoor climate; as soon as we stepped inside, there was a very musty/unpleasant odor, and in the dining room we found patches of mold on the exterior wall, which meant we didn’t spend any time at all in that room (nor did we leave our luggage there). We were lucky with the weather, with temperatures between 28 and 36 degrees, so we were able to open the windows in every room right away and throughout our stay, which helped alleviate the poor indoor air quality. As noted, there is no washing machine or coffee maker in the apartment, and the freezer is an open compartment in the refrigerator that was unable to keep ice cubes completely frozen. We shared the entrance from the street—which is the courtyard intended as the apartment’s outdoor area—with two young people who are permanent tenants in the building, and they were constantly coming and going. We certainly had a lovely stay; we experienced great hospitality from Matteo, who responded immediately to our inquiries and messages, and great warmth from his father, who often stopped by (even bringing vegetables and fruit from his own garden).
