Hiking Trails in Scenic Surroundings

When you’re staying at a vacation home, there’s a wide variety of opportunities to experience nature right outside your door. We’ve put together a guide featuring hand-picked hikes in the Danish countryside that are suitable for both families—where you need to take the little ones’ energy levels into account—and more seasoned hikers.

All of the selected routes are located near a Landfolk vacation home, so you can combine your vacation with a trip out into the beautiful natural landscape of the local area.

Djursland

Exotic Animals and Djursland’s Largest Lake

Route: Gravlevstien Length: 8 km

On the Gravlevstien trail, you’ll follow the old railroad line from Ebeltoft to Gravlev, passing through varied terrain ranging from lush fields and heathland to coniferous forest. You might also be lucky enough to spot exotic animals behind fences as the trail takes a detour past the back of Ree Park. If you need a break along the way, you can enjoy a beautiful nature experience at Djursland’s largest lake, Stubbesø, where you can, among other things, take in the view from a birdwatching tower.

Enjoy the view of Ebeltoft Bay and discover carnivorous plants

Route: Langemosestien Length: 6 km

On the Langemosestien trail, you can experience a varied landscape featuring, among other things, pristine oak forests, marshes, jungle-like woods, and a beautiful view overlooking Ebeltoft Bay. Langemosen itself was originally a lake in a kettle hole formed by the Ice Age, so if you step out onto it, you can feel the ground swaying beneath you. Along the way, you’ll also pass cattle pastures with conservation cattle, and near Langemosen grows the carnivorous plant sundew, which the kids might think is pretty cool.

Skagen

Breathtaking dune landscapes at the tip of Denmark

Trails at Skagen Klitplantage: Stokrenderuten, Sandflugtsruten, Løvfaldsruten, and others Distances: From 2.4–5.5 km

Skagen Klitplantage offers many hiking trails where you can combine nature experiences with everything from the charming sand-covered church and unique viewpoints to Sandmilen, Hulsig Hede, and the town of Skagen—and, not least, enjoy the area’s breathtaking heath and dune landscapes. It’s a good idea to bring binoculars, a packed lunch, and hot coffee in a thermos so you can make the most of a day in the plantation. On the Stokrenderute trail, you can use the shelter area, which has both a campfire site and clean drinking water. If you’re really in the mood for hiking, it’s also a great idea to visit Skagen’s famous landmark, Grenen, which is worth a day trip in its own right.

Thy

Near the refreshing North Sea in Thy National Park

Route: Flade Sø -ruten Length: 13.5 km

The hike around the beautiful freshwater lake Flade Sø can start and end in Agger By, where you can walk up onto the dike and follow the marked trail northward with the North Sea on your left. The walk around the lake itself is about 10 kilometers, so you can also choose to drive closer to the lake. From June onward, you can fish for pike, zander, and eel, among other species. It’s a great idea to take a detour down to the beach, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee you’ve brought along to the sound of the North Sea waves.

Funen

Nature Experiences for the Whole Family at “Fyns Hoved”

Route: Fyns Hoved -ruten Length: 5 km

The hike around Fyns Hoved offers beautiful nature experiences, rare plants, and remnants from World War II. You can choose whether to hike east or west. The route itself isn’t marked, but at the entrances to the area, you’ll find overview maps that you can save to your phone. There are also great swimming spots, as Fyns Hoved is surrounded by water on both sides; the western side in Korshavnen, in particular, has a child-friendly sandy beach. The area is also known for being one of the places in Denmark with the least rainfall, so your chances of feeling the sun on your face are good. At Fyn’s highest point, Baesbanke, you can enjoy a fantastic view of both the sea and the wildlife at Fællesstrand.

Odsherred and Tisvilde

Enjoy the view from a height of 35 meters

Route: Sonnerup Forest -ruten Length: 7.5 km

On this route, you can explore the remains of a castle from the time of Valdemar the Victorious, burial mounds from the Bronze Age, and enjoy beautiful views of Lake Arresø. The hike can start from any of the six different parking lots along the route. Along the forest, a 3-km-long coastline stretches out to the Kattegat, where you can take a detour to the beach. From the protected 35-meter-high cliff, Klintebjerg, you can enjoy the most beautiful view, taking in Gilleleje, Hesselø, and Odden.

Take a hike in Troldeskoven and visit castle ruins

Routes at Tisvilde Hegn: The Tibirke and Asserbo Routes Distances: 5 and 7 km, respectively

On the Asserbo Route, you’ll start at the old Asserbo castle ruins, located near a parking lot. Along the way, you’ll pass through moraine landscapes, Bronze Age burial mounds, and dune landscapes along the Kattegat. In the wild Troldeskov—Denmark’s oldest pine forest—the curves of the ancient trees and their gnarled branches sweeping along the ground create a truly magical atmosphere. Not far from the forest, you can experience the beautiful coastline of sand dunes at Tisvilde Beach, one of Denmark’s best swimming beaches. So it’s a good idea to pack your swimsuit in your bag for this trip.

The five-kilometer Tibirke Trail, which both starts and ends at Tibirke Church, features steep hills, sandy beach ridges, and soft forest floor. Along the way, you’ll pass Sømosen, Horsekær—where sacrifices were made to the god of fertility, Frey, during the Viking Age—and the 57-meter-high moraine hill, Frederikshøj, named after Frederick VII. Up here, you can sit down on a bench and enjoy a well-deserved break with a cup of coffee in hand before the trip draws to a close.

Møn

Experience magnificent nature at Møns Klint

Trails at Møns Klint: Havrelukke, Jydelejet, Klinteskovsruten, and others. Length: 5 km

The area around Møns Klint offers a variety of trails of varying lengths. The truly unique view of the nearly vertical limestone cliffs cannot be adequately described—it must be experienced. No matter which route you choose, you’re guaranteed beautiful nature experiences, but the spectacular view from Møn’s highest point, Aborrebjerg, is of course something quite special. Down on the beach, you can find fossils, mussels, and unique stones that the sea has washed free from the cliff’s sides. That way, the kids can take home their own little souvenir. Geocenter Møns Klint is definitely worth a visit if you’d like to delve into the area’s wild past, and there are plenty of activities for the kids there.

Lolland

Discover the rich birdlife and enjoy the view of Langeland

Route: Albuen Length: 11.5 km

The hike along Lolland’s “elbow” offers a rich variety of birdlife, where you can spot swans, cormorants, and various waterfowl. At the top of the dunes, you can enjoy the beautiful view of Langeland and the charming little Albuen Lighthouse. Enjoy the packed lunch you’ve brought while watching the ships sail by. The light at Albuen is reminiscent of what you’ll find in Skagen, and the area is part of the Nakskov Fjord Nature Park. You can also choose to combine this route with a walking tour of the charming market town of Nakskov, where you can pick up brochures at the tourist office.
