Get nature photographer Sarah Green’s recommendations for extraordinary nature experiences on the island of Anholt
Nature photographer Sarah Green runs Denmark’s largest travel blog about nature experiences, with over 10,000 readers per month. We invited her back in September to a “ Landfolk ” vacation home on the beautiful island of Anholt, and here she shares her recommendations for some truly special nature experiences you can enjoy on this small island in the Kattegat.
How did your passion for photographing and sharing nature experiences begin?
It actually started with a personal desire—and an excuse—to get out into nature more often. I was working as a graphic designer at an agency, which mainly involved office work. Over time, I realized it wasn’t making me happy. Nature, on the other hand, is my sanctuary—it’s where I find joy and the desire to express myself creatively.
What’s good to know when visiting Anholt for the first time?
First and foremost, it’s important to know that the ferry from Grenå to Anholt only runs once a day, so you can’t get there and back on the same day. In addition, it’s a small ferry with almost no room for cars, so I’d recommend either bringing a bike or renting one on Anholt. There are only two paved roads on the island, while the rest are gravel roads, so a bike is definitely the best way to get around. Upon arrival, it’s about 3 km from Anholt Harbor to town, so it might be a good idea to use the taxi service available if you have a lot of luggage. I’d also definitely recommend bringing a good pair of hiking shoes, as Anholt is perfect for long walks through its wild nature.
Where’s a good place to start if you want to experience Anholt’s unique nature?
Nearly 80% of Anholt consists of nature, which is a truly unique experience. I’d definitely recommend taking the hike out to Anholt Lighthouse through the Ørkenen, which is the most beautiful open lowland landscape. It’s truly a distinctive experience that you should set aside a whole day for, since it’s a 10-kilometer round trip, and you’ll want time to enjoy the walk and the surroundings. Anholt Lighthouse is only open on select days.
Are there any places where you can see Anholt’s landscape from above?
Yes, there are two hills called Sønderbjerg and Nordbjerg. Sønderbjerg is located near the town and is 48 meters high. From here, you can enjoy views of most of Anholt and the sea. Nordbjerg is located near the harbor, and from here you can also take in the fantastic view of the dune landscape and out toward Flakket, which is known for its rich birdlife.
Is it possible to walk all the way around the island?
Yes, it is. By following the beautiful beaches that stretch all the way around the island’s coastline. The walk itself is about 25 kilometers, so it’s a good idea to wear sturdy hiking shoes and set aside a full day for the trip. There’s truly something unique about having so much beach almost entirely to yourself—here you really get a sense of that isolated island life.
Was there a nature experience that made a particular impression on you?
On Anholt, you can experience the “Dark Sky” because the island is so far from the mainland. I’ve long wanted to take some great photos of the Milky Way, and there are few places in Denmark where this can be done without light pollution ruining the conditions. On Anholt, I could actually see the Milky Way with the naked eye, which is truly a special experience.
Are there any special local delicacies you should try?
Anholt is known for its langoustines, which are served at several of the island’s restaurants. And I’m actually going back during fall break, when Anholt Gin is organizing a juniper berry picking event with local volunteers. I’m really looking forward to that.
What can you expect from a vacation on Anholt?
Anholt is a paradise for nature lovers like me, and the unique island lifestyle helps you really slow down—away from the noise of cars and the hustle and bustle of city life. Anholt isn’t for those looking for a vacation packed with cultural attractions, water parks, or street parties. Here, nature’s experiences speak for themselves, and it’s the little things that have a chance to make an impression—like coming across a hare or a deer along the way. Anholt is a Danish nature vacation with a capital N.
What do you think of the vacation home as a base?
The best part of the vacation home is definitely the privacy, the personal atmosphere, and the peace and quiet. In a vacation home, you have your own space, which is nice when you’re on the go. It’s great to be able to decide for yourself when to cook, and the personal touch in the decor made me feel at home right away.
